So I had 4 days off this past weekend and drove north and east of here, looking for an interesting place to camp.
Somewhere around 300 miles from my door, I turned off a logging road and onto what I later realized was an ATV trail...in a few places it was about 1/2 inch narrower than my truck but after a bit of pounding my doors open and close again...good thing it's a $1200 truck!
Anyway about 10 km in, I found a lake and camped there overnight. Nice spot but pretty buggy. Six or so big game trails and lots of tracks...moose, deer, maybe elk too - they were not all very clear and I am not an expert!
The next morning we headed out on mountain bikes to explore the ATV trail. We had ridden for maybe half an hour and were stopped for some water when I saw the black bear. It was on the trail, just where we'd come from, looking at us. Just a tiny little guy, I would say no more than 250 pounds? And probably more like 200. Beautiful, glossy hibernation coat on him though.
"Look," I said to Erin. "A bear."
"Oh!" she said. "Wow, he's pretty close."
"Where is the dog?"
And that's when the dog spotted the bear! She went charging after him but he was very fast, off into the bush and gone.
And you know what I didn't have with me?
A camera! I could have had a shot of a gorgeous black bear not more than fifty feet away, in the middle of the wilderness, with nothing around but us and our bicycles for probably five or six kilometers! Or of the dog in full gallop after a bear five times her weight, and the bear off like a rocket!
I was very disappointed but what can you do?
So who else has had some great shots that weren't?
