When bone cover colors don't match your expectations :(

I expect that variations in colour has more to do with the bone than the dyes. Moisture content, bleach or other processing chemicals and density will affect the colour outcome. The problem with mismatched scales is sorting and matching.

I've been getting tired of this issue with their Dark Red Bone and Chestnut Bone. I wrote Case about it this morning. It'd be cool if others did so as well. I used their online form.

My Chestnut Bone Peanut looks ok but that was after being sent a few lemons and sending them back. I will write Case using the online form and thanks for the info.

This may have been posted, but i think the reason the shield side is lighter a lot of times is because of more grinding to make the shield fit flush. They also claim that the color ( or lack thereof) comes out only after the knife is assembled and hafted. So they have no way of determining if the scales will match until the knife is already assembled. The colors are also different because Case says that the EPA won't let them use the same chemicals as they used to in the 70's. This is just what I have read.

I'm pretty sure that you can send the knife in and they will replace it free though.

The Stainless knives consistently turn out better. Also, other makers seem to have it handled.

I'm not asking for perfection, but it be nice if they could get it in the ballpark.

Case needs to hear from us.

I agree that the Case concept of "dark red" is a bit weak. The dye doesn't penetrate the bone enough so you occasionally end up with pinkish or even white areas when they haft the knives.

I like CV but tend to avoid their Dark Red Bone CV. I have three in that family and only one of them truly looked good right out of the box. I don't mind dyeing Case SS knives but the RIT stovetop dye method causes pitting in the CV blades when I have tried it.
