Question is in the thread title. Typically I have just made a black Boltaron (Kydex analog) taco sheath as standard, or sometimes something with Holstex that has a basketweave, carbon fiber, or raptor skin pattern when I think it suits the knife. But I'm wondering how many people here that actually frequent that section would prefer to either have no sheath and get a custom leather one made by someone or the option to allow an extra business day for shipping, in order to choose the sheath type after purchasing the knife.

Can you please vote that in the poll 1 1911bphil . That's going to be my main reference point as I come back to this thread over time. Thanks.

I updated the poll answers to accommodate your point about another maker possibly doing the sheath.

When I first read that. I thought it wasn't an option.

I probably would be with 1911. I would choose different sheaths for different knives depending on what I wanted them to do.

I generally buy the knife and factor the sheath in to that equation. But I am also a leftie. So I am already an awkward customer.

So I kind of want the sheath. But I want them to do the right sheath without me having to ask.

So my last fixtie I got was for a molle vest. And that kind of takes a specific sheath.

Would be nice, but a maker can't anticipate the desires of everyone, so the "default" sheath that gets made would be a righty sheath.

Just needs the right eyelet spacing: 1.5" apart. I just made a new template for tek-locks and one for molle yesterday since my old ones had become worn from many uses. Those two hole profiles will accomodate most people's clips, since a lot of clips have slots to allow for multiple carry options.

You did not offer the option "prefer a knife stand' to display the knife when not using it. As a knife maker I find many customers do not intend to put the knife too heavy use even though it would hold up. They plan to display it someplace and not wear it. I get asked to make stands a lot. Curious how it is for other knife makers.

Yeah. I bought the last one. CRKT siwi partly because of the techlock.

But it is the wrong sort for molle. But a normal tecklock should bolt straight on.

I realise I am being awkward with sheath preferences. I think Skramas are the only ones that came with a leftie righty no sheath cover thing option

3d printed would be cheap. And a really cool sort of addition rather than say the cloth or stickers or box.

I build minimalist sheaths that, aside from the look of the eyelets on one side vs the other, are completely ambidextrous.

And if someone wanted a sheath that could do tek-lock and molle, that's easy too: .75" hole spacing.

I've never been asked to. I suppose it would be easy enough. But that would be implied under the no sheath option. The point of "no sheath" is a conversation between maker and buyer at the time of the sale.

I prefer to purchase a complete package whenever possible, knife and sheath (even attachment methods, if available). I think it's a reasonable compromise for a maker to ask a purchaser to clarify whether they want a sheath or not, and if so, then offer a selection based on the maker's expertise.

For the record, David, I've enjoyed all the sheaths you've made for the knives I've purchased from you.

I just saw a knife stand on amazon for $20. That is the kind of thing I, as a knife maker, would refer the customer to third parties for anyway. Just like belt clips and specialized carry systems. I started getting into them for a while there, but everyone wants something a little different, and all those wants are already serviced by companies that mass produce them and can charge mass production prices, rather than have me hand make them.

And then we would be back to. You choose the sheath option.

So let me get this straight: you want the right left sheath to come standard…

The mind readers I know suck at making knives, perhaps the two skill sets are mutually exclusive. (Lot of them suck at mind reading, too. Misunderstanding is where they really shine).

Right, but do you want black, brown, tan, orange, red, basketweave pattern, carbon fiber pattern, raptor skin pattern, etc. And if I choose wrong and put the knife up for sale, maybe nobody grabs it because the sheath is wrong?

Exept David solves that with a leftie/righty sheath.

I just looked at it in the CAD program. It's a neat idea, but there is no guarantee it would hold a given knife upright. It would have to be customized every time to mate to the handle.
