Right, but do you want black, brown, tan, orange, red, basketweave pattern, carbon fiber pattern, raptor skin pattern, etc. And if I choose wrong and put the knife up for sale, maybe nobody grabs it because the sheath is wrong?

And that is rhe thing. If I bought say a cowboy knife the tek-lock sheath would possibly put me off.

Personally, I buy knives to use them (if only a few times) so need a sheath, and prefer it to be a good sheath with good protection and retention.

Kydex is fine, but I prefer leather.

My preference would be for the knife maker to have or make (or collaborate with someone who can make) a few different sheath styles appropriate for the knife. A dangler, high ride, low ride, or even just slip for putting the knife in a pack would be appropriate IMO. Both styles available in Kydex(like) material ready for a tek-lock and/or leather when as appropriate.

That is a filet knife is probably best in something kydex-like with drain/vent holes. A giant bowie might go either way.

As a custom maker ,I believe you should be able to offer extra options compared to mass produced .

If someone is going to bother with decorative colors/textures on the handle , why not the sheath also ?

I'm not impressed with kydex anymore
I've seen old ass leather that has been neglected and is just fine.
There is plenty of leather treatment options for restoration of leather if ones concerned
But kydex is plastic, once it wears in and thins out over time, retention is subpar at best. Your findings may be different

Kydex can be reheated and tightened. Not that I've ever had that be a problem with a well made kydex sheath.

I have turned a kydex sheath for one knife into a sheath for another knife by reheating it and press forming it.

I definitely want a fixed blade to come with a maker's best take on a serviceable sheath. The most attractive feature of a knife to me is usability out of the box. Buying a new knife and having to embark on an Easter egg hunt for a functional sheath is a hard pass for me.

Yeah. I bought the last one. CRKT siwi partly because of the techlock.

But it is the wrong sort for molle. But a normal tecklock should bolt straight on.

I realise I am being awkward with sheath preferences. I think Skramas are the only ones that came with a leftie righty no sheath cover thing option
I love the Tereva knife sheath options. Great leather sheaths, plastic inserts, right/left options, plastic inserts available alone. I wish more knifemakers would go this route

You did not offer the option "prefer a knife stand' to display the knife when not using it. As a knife maker I find many customers do not intend to put the knife too heavy use even though it would hold up. They plan to display it someplace and not wear it. I get asked to make stands a lot. Curious how it is for other knife makers.
I would prefer a vacuum chamber....

Mr Mary, I'm the one who's asking for a knofe from your next AEB-L run, which means not now.

I think that it is best to talk with the maker because it is a custom made anyway. Clear communication = better service and satisfaction.

For some less expensive knives with sheath that cost the price of the knife itself, like the JaakariPuukko (61 CAD no sheath vs 104 CAD with sheath), I would take no sheath. The value of knives vs sheath is not great. With cheaper knives, I can afford to make or use some random sheaths from whatever I have in hand.

The plastic insert is only available on some model like the Skarma. I asked for my 140 and they said no.

I prefer a pancake boltaron/kydex/holstex sheath, and will seriously entertain an option for a fancier one depending on the knife.

Kitchen knives, no need for a sheath. I use blade guards when they're not on a magnetic wooden knife block.

A fixed blade knife w/o a sheath can’t be readily used unless it’s a kitchen or shop knife. An unused knife is a shame.

Randall Made knives come with a sheath made for the blade. I haven’t heard complaints.

I just bought a Randall Model 10 which my friend had never used in the ~10 years he owned it. As soon as I bought it I put him to work cutting up some onions and peppers to fry up for smoked hot italian sausage. You should have seem the look of delight on his face, using what was his knife for the first time 🙂

-Kydex/Boltatron for ease/versatility/utility, the last knife I received from you I decided to wear as a neck knife proper this time, and it is well done, no change in retention at all from probably a few hundred pulls just looking at it and hearing it click into place. Satisfying and reassuring, that sound is.

-Leather for beauty and special order. Perhaps the option for both?

Originally I was thinking to write about engraving Kydex (and it would be cool if you could do orange/green/burgundy and patterned Kydex, I would spring some extra bucks for something like that) but a better idea seems Kydex encased in leather? Would be sweet. I, and I am sure other fans of your creations would love to see what I find to be a unique take on the artistic element of knifemaking, to sheathes, but without giving up the security of Kydex.

At the very least, I am sure different colors of leather sheath with KD under would be a winner, but if you burned patterns like basketweave or other things on there, it would be a winner. Personally would love one themed with roses, lemons and garlic.
