When did you realize you're an addict?

I’ll apologize up front for the length of this post, but I’ve been pondering this the last few days.
As a network administrator at my workplace for the past few years, I’ve carried a Buck tool on my belt for the various tasks I have, from cutting wires to opening up computers. It’s been a great tool. I also had a SAK I packed for trips or camping. Not bad. Recently, I’m not sure why, I started thinking about some knives I had owned when I was younger, but which had “disappeared” over the years. They included a Buck 110. I started looking on eBay (a whole other story) for these knives, and eventually bought a very nice mint 110 FG model. It was sooooooo nice to hold it in my hand and open and close the blade over and over and over. I thought I ought to have a nice pocket knife, too. Eventually I purchased a sweet used Buck Cadet 303, cleaned it up and sharpened it. I love the snap of the blades, and opening and closing it over and over and over. I had a few dollars, and I started picking up some other small knives, including some Case Peanut, small Stockman, and texas toothpick models. All very very nice, bone or stag handles. Then I got a MOP texas toothpick. Really really nice. I also got several other carry pocket knives from Buck and Case.
I kept looking, and picked up my first high-tech model folder, a gorgeous Buck 175 model. Wow, I could open and close it with one hand! The blade is really really sharp. Somehow, serendipitously, I ended up at bladeforums.com. Jeez, there’s some real knife “freaks” out there (I say that in the kindest way). I started looking at other makers. Benchmade, Columbia River Knife and Tool, Kershaw (all within an hour’s drive from me), Chris Reeve. Nice big high tech folders, etc... So now I’ve picked up a Cold Steel Voyager, and am looking at an M16 and some other CRKT knives.
Now I hear this siren song .... ”Sebenza” ........
My question is, at what moment did any of you folks know you were hooked, I mean really hooked? I’ve read the recent posts on number and type of knives people carry, and at first, carrying 3, 4, or 6 knives at a time seemed a little.....excessive. I laughed out loud at descriptions of where and why people carried these knives. After a couple days, it started to seem.....reasonable!!!!! I began to look forward to browsing through the posts, and the sales, and the knife gossip.
Could I be an ADDICT? Is it something to do with the riddle of steel? (My favorite blade-related movie “Conan the Barbarian”) Help!

Wooohhhhweee, that was a long post! I'll make mine short but sweet....I realized I was a knife addict yesterday

No problem here on this end, hehehe I can quit anytime I want to...I just don't want to. I did get a po box to start receiving my blades at though, security reasons on course. How many blades on me at the moment...hey its none of your business.

A while back I was laid off temporarily, and with my last check had a choice between a new MT Kestrel or groceries. Man, I love that Kestrel!

I don't know about hooked but I have always enjoyed knives. Probably because they are one of mankind's basic tools.

I got my first knife at age 11, and have bought, been given, and have even found many more over the years. I usually carry at least 3 on me most of the time. I sometimes even have trouble deciding which ones to carry on a particular day or for a particular use. I probably use a knife at least a dozen times a day. An additional hand maybe. Just part of me. Kinda like a watch. It just seems natural to carry and use one.

I have always just liked the look, and feel and sound of a good knife. I like to maintain and sharpen them. One thing that has always struck me is that knives are all around, used all the time and with the exception of some of us, they are not a hot topic of discussion. Most housewives don't talk about knives until their's are dull. Then they become a major issue. Most boys (of all ages) are facinated by knives. Gotta have em. Boy Scouts teach about them and carry and use them. Just part of everyday life. Take care of them and they will last a long time. Most are likely lost before they are worn out.

I guess the bottom line is, I don't know why I like knives. I just do. Best reason in the world as far as I am concerned.

I realized that I was a hopeless case when I found this site and started checking it two and three times a day,(minimum). Now, If I'm not online surfing through the posts, I'm on my way to the post office to either pickup a new knife or sending one out to another addict like myself. Hell if I could put my computer in the truck, I'ld just stay parked at the post office.

Cuchillo,

That Voyager you've got coming was one of my first knives... the reason it's been used so little is that I was quick to acquire more expensive blades after that one... I guess it was soon after I got the Voyager that I was hooked. I liked the overall design, but the Zytel handle looked a bit plain Jane in comparison to the Benchmades that followed. Then onto customs...

That Voyager will probably be all the knife you'll ever need, but if you're anything like me, it'll be far from your last one.

After it was too late to do anything about it; except buy more knives.

I've always been in love with knives, but I realized I was an addict when I (like pse-link) started coming on this site a minimum of a couple times a day. Today I was writing a chemestry test and I just started thinking about which knives I was going to buy next. Oh well, you only live once

Hi, my name's Ed, and I'm a knife-a-holic.
I realized I was a knife-a-holic, when I started NEEDING to own a knife based on forum recommendations. Now I buy knives based pretty much on what I hear in the forums. And once in a while I go crazy and by an unreviewed knife; just so I can brag about it..... he he..... Oh, and I gave up my other hobbies too.....

I have to say that was a very well written post for a fairly new member. I look forward to reading your future postings.

I've always had a reputation as the man to come to when you need a knife, but I confirmed my addiction when I found this site. Unfortunately, most of my knife experience up to this point has been vicarious. I did get a little worried whenever almost 3/4 of my summer's pay went to buying knives here on the forums.

Still, I say just enjoy the ride! At least when Armageddon rolls around we'll all be prepared!

I've always had a knife on me, since I was probably 8. When did I realize I was an addict? Not 'til you bunch of sick-os told me. Now I've joined the ranks.

I've got the schizophrenic blues
No I don't
Yes I do...

Two things tipped me off that I was addicted to knives. One was that I started buying both the plain and serrated versions of the same model(mostly Spyderco's). Two was when I started running out of space in my knife chest. That's when I started to sell off some of my early knife purchases that my taste have outgrown, mainly since finding this forum.

I gotta admit, it's nice to not be alone in this. To think, 1 month ago I was just toolin along just fine. Now, I've purchased 13 knives in the last month, and I've got more in mind, only more expensive.

Richard--I think the knives vs. groceries post is one of the most hilarious things I've ever read at this or any other forum.

tom and ed---funny funny!!

pse and invasion--I'm already hooked on reading the forums on my lunch break or before or after work. this is definitely an active bunch.

rgray- "buy more knives" I can do that!!

freemon--I got a PO box, too. I work at a school and nobody wants to ship knives here.....go figure!

ryan, thanks for the smooth transaction, i have a feeling you're right about it not being my last (this week!)

I loved and carried knives for as long as I can remember. Up until about two years ago I thought I was the only one, then I saw my first knife magazine. Schwingggg!
Then last year I found this place. The last time I posted to a thread like this, I said I wasn't an addict, I was in control. I must revise my opinion of myself because that is no longer true. I was fired this past Feb. and was out of work for three months. During that time I managed to buy three custom knives, (I had only bought production knives until that point) and receive another handmade knife as a gift from Michael L6 Cooper. Not bad for no income.

I have been back to work now just under two weeks, no check yet. I have two addional knives coming from Jake Evans, and plans for more.

I know now I am an addict, and very very sick. I know I can out spend my income on knives with no problem, or should I say no concern. There are knives on my PhotoPoint site that my wife has no idea I own.

This is not a good thing!

A) when I broke the $100 barrier.
B) when I went to the NYCCKS with $300+ and was dissappointed that I came home with change...
When I found myself logging on here more than 2x a day!

Phil, I think the wife may find out now

must relate this story....was at my wifes best friends daughters wedding (got that!!) about 3 months ago....someone had tied the rings on to the pillow a little too well, and after about 30 seconds of wrestling with it the pastor said out loud: "Wheres Mayo?"
