When did your knife addiction begin?

Mine started when I was 7 or 8 years old. My Mom go tme started. I believe when we went camping........She always carried a knife. We also used to fish then too......So, since then, I have been carrying and collecting knives.

My first knife was a Camillus 2 blade folder my folks gave me in Jr. high school.

I didn't carry it everyday, but it was always with me on weekends.

I started carrying a knife everyday as a probie fireman when my first captain chewed me out for NOT having a knife! Or a box of wooden matches in my pocket!:)

My everyday knife these days is an Al Mar SERE 2000.

Oh, yeah......as a Fire Captain with probie firefighters of my own, they too carry a knife, the wooden match thing is not very high on my list of must haves these days;)

I was about 5 when I first wanted a knife, I had some money saved up at the time and bought a small folder with a scrimshawed eagle on it (still have it some place). If I remember right, about a few months after that I had at least another if not two more. What can I say...I can't help it... :)

Eh, I think I'm on a different page than the typical member of these forums. I've had a knife collection since I was about 3 years old, starting out with SAK imitations and lockbacks my dads company would give to him for work, which he in turn gave to me. I always liked playing around with them and such, and still buy them here and there. My next purchase is going to me an EDC type folder, but I don't see myself using it as an EDC, or any other knife for that matter. As much as I'm interested in knives and see their many purposes, I just don't have a daily need for a knife in my pocket, so I do not carry them, nor am I addicted to em. I like studying all the little nuances and varieties of them, such as tip styles and blade materials, but I don't feel a need to own a knife of every type and so forth. I do this to a degree with other things more, but still not much. Smoking pipes, for instance, I like having a wide variety, even though I could make do with some papers I could buy for $1.50 99% of the time.

I've always liked knives since Ginger Barnes gave me one for Valentine's day when I was in the 5th grade:) ..

I must add though, that I never really seriously got into collecting them until my Dad gave me a SOG TI Vision a few years ago.

I had never seen a knife like that, and once it got in my paws I have had a real blast enjoying the more contemporary designs.

I thought I was addicted to them long before until I found this web site lol .. then it really started.. My eyes were opened to all sorts of stuff I did not know.. I say  guys! but I bet my wife says :thumbdn: lol ..

I can't remember not having a knife of some sort.My dad was a big hunter when I was a kid so knives were always handy. Then when I was 10 he gave me his skinner with the promice that I wouldn't cut myself with it.15 years later and I still haven't cut myself on it yet.
I'd have to say the real clincher was when I started comming here.I had a ka-bar and an old bolo machete plus a few scattered nothing blades then.....
Now I'm going 40 strong and still climbing.
kabar,spyderco,buck/strider,ontario,TOPS,fallkniven and then some.

My grandfather and dad were knife nuts. They started me on knives and guns basically from the time I was born. I have many of both of their knives and guns now that both are gone. You should have seen the look on the wifes face when I started bringing all that stuff home. haha.
Same here. I had a bolt action 16 ga., a 32 revolver and a Barlow and a fillet knife by age 8...

Around 7 or 8 I got my first knife, a scout knife. I cannot remember a time since then I have not had at least one knife on me. I carried a lever action auto all through high school, even in Cal-E-Fornia! No one ever said a thing about it.

The story on that lever action is unique. I used to deliver newspapers, from the 7th through 12th grade. In New Jersey(through 9th grade), there was this customer who lived in a huge house surrounded by barbed wire with a guard shack(always manned by a well dressed wise guy). Lots of black suicide door Lincolns coming and going(this was the early 70s). Coming up on Christmas, a black Lincoln glides down to the gate when I approach to give the guard the paper. Door opens and this very well dressed older guy gives me a gift wrapped box and says "Merry Christmas son, dont open until Christmas, dont let your parents see it". I open it up X-mas eve down in the basement and find a switchblade within. Still have it to this day, a Hubertus!!
I guess that was a nice tip from a mobster?? Thats New Jersey!

First knife I bought which started the ball rolling was a titanium handled Spyderco Police, bought at a fles market while on vacation in Oklahoma City(still lived in CA. at the time). Started subscribing to Tactical K nives from the first issue, and started buying tactical knives en masse at that time,1994.

I carry a black blade Benchmade Rukus, black Kershaw Leek, black Leatherman Charge TI, Surefire U2 flashlight, and a handgun or two every day since concealed licenses are available in Oklahoma. Interesting is that in Oklahoma the gun does not have to be registered to carry, you can carry any number you desire, and any type you desire(if you qualify with a semi-auto).

Life is good!

Im not sure when i first got into knives, sometime in middle school i believe...but the real fun didnt start till i found this site!

So weird looking back to the fifties when I was in grade school compared to today's schools.

I had a Cub Scout knife that I used to carry as well as a few cheap folders. I literally knew nothing about knife care at the time and was most disappointed when they would start to rust.

But I enjoyed using and playing with them. Teachers back then wouldn't care in the least if you had or displayed a penknife.

Funny, considering the atmosphere that pervades schools today, but I didn't turn out to be a criminal and neither did any of my pals who carried them.

It started off with weapons from martial arts movies I watched as a kid. I wanted to be a ninja when I grew up. Then I had to have a hollow handle survival knife after the Rambo movies came out.

I pretty much lost interest in knives until I joined ROTC and bought a Leatherman PST for field exercises. A few cadets had multitools and I thought they were cool. When I went on active duty I bought a Buck 110 and a Spyderco Endura with a combo edge and molded plastic clip.

My knife interest once again faded for a few years until I got a job in a packaging facility. I began looking for a small handy knife I could use at work and for other chores. That is where my current interest is at, small pocketable folders.

Mine started when I was 6 and my dad gave me my first pocket knife and I did somehting stupid with it and had it taken away. Then around 8 I got one of those small SAK's and would carry it everywhere. That got me to see how useful a knife can be and from then on i tried to carry one where ever I was.

I've liked knives for as long as I can remember.

I still can see my late grand father and dad doing almost everything with their trusty old Herder Solingen slipjoint.

As matter of fact my first knife was a Herder. Given to me by my grand father. IIRC, I was about 9 years old.

When I found this forum while searching for a single-purchase, "good" <$50 folder to supplement my SAK EDC. It was all downhill from there.

I was about 7 years old. My father used a .22 rifle, a green shoulder bag, and a military fixed blade.

I'm 52, now..., and I LOVE all three! I have half a dozen .22 rifles, about 30 bags (of different types), and near 100 knives.

I used to dig into father's drawer, occasionally, when my parents were away.., and just hold it, looked at it, and wanted one for me. Got my first knife when I was around 10, got my own .22 when I was 11. Got my first "good" knife when 12.., it was a Puma Skinner..., then Gerbers (when Gerbers were *good* knives, and then others.
