When do you add the choil?

After the blade shape is rough ground I'll use a hacksaw to make a notch and then I will use that as a guide for my bevels. After the bevels are ground I will use a round file to make the choil. All done pre-heat treat.

If I'm doing a large knife I will drill it out prior to profiling the knife. On small knives I will add one with a file once the bevel has been ground (ground post heat treat).

Anytime. If I decide I want one after heat treat I'll just buzz it in with my dremel and little(1/4in) ceramic grinding wheel. Just make sure you don't heat it up too much. I use a little water post heat treat.
