Hell on to everyone, my name is Dan Rector and I have been lurking here on BF for about 4 years. I can't thank all the makings here enough for their valuable information they pass on. I just got a LN dewar and was wondering at what point in the heat treating process do you guys put your blades into the LN and why at that point. I have checked the crucible data. Just if someone got better results doing it differene. I use mostly s30v and s35vn. Thanks everyone.

Dan

As soon as they reach room temp into the LN they go. The Mf point on those steel is -100F so it is to finish the quench.

I have checked the crucible data.

The Crucible data isn't great.

In my experience every steel is a little different and the application of cryo is not done the same way with every steel. But, generally speaking its primarily important to complete the quench so, for a knife, it should be done before any snap temper. You don't want any long pause or reversal in temperature during quench on complex steels that can stabilize RA.

I agree, I've never seen the need to snap temper.

I go from plates to hand cool... quick cool water dunk.. dry then into sub zero.

yep in in the same boat quench to room temp and then into LN over night temper 1 and 2 in the morning
