When do you know a knife is a “fit”?

The way it rides in my pocket is generally the most important thing to me. Take my BM940, even clipped beside my penlight I still have plenty of room to get my hand in my pocket. My PM2, however, is a fantastic knife. Love the way it feels in hand and cuts, but I can't stand the way it feels in my pocket, so it gets left home most of the time, unless I can slip it in a backpack or clip it to a vest or jacket. Same goes for most spydercos unfortunately... They all feel like I'm carrying around a dinner plate in my pocket, so I typically over look them when looking to purchase a knife. But then there are knives like the ZT 0450, it rides really well in my pocket, but the I didn't like the way it deployed. With it being a narrow frame lock I just couldn't seem to find a good way to hold it while opening it. So, most of the time an EDC gets compared to my 940 and falls short in one way or another.
I feel the same way, once it is and out of my pocket a couple of times I know if I will like it or not. I too love the BM 940 and have gotten to the point where I know if I will like a knife or not, based on its shape.

When the knife whispers to me. When it tells me things, and we laugh quietly together. Usually I don't really bond with the knife until it actually whispers me awake at night......................

I would say looks, then ease of use. Does it feel smooth and natural when I grab out of my pocket, opening it, slicing something then closing it back up and clipping it in my pocket.

For me, there are so many good knives that the knife has to has a certain feature, or factor that makes it suitable for above others for a specific role/task. OFC the knife has to be aesthetically pleasing, good quality etc also.

I get the honeymoon period effect. If a knife looks good and feels good in hand I fall for it. Then goes a few days or few weeks or months of trying to use it. I've found that if it's not a good slicer or doesn't carry well I trade it out. Right now I'm in a love hate relationship with bokers mini kwaiken. Going to see how I feel about it after it comes back from a regrind.

Getting past the honey moon is important. The only reason i found the one is a combo of being a fantastic knife and a very important gift.
That did it for a few of my keepers.
