When does It end?

Many good advice here. If you are like me though, there is the desire to try many knives out for myself. Even bladesteeel and color variations on the same knife model I like is usually enough for me to want it. Some just pass through, and some stay in the collection/get used. Bad on the pockets indeed. Full Customs are on the horizon. End is nowhere near in sight.

The most expensive knife in my collection is a Benchmade 707 and I greatly enjoy it. My rotation includes about 5 modern folders for my main blade and 4 traditionals for my back up. I am not ready to downsize just yet but am looking into different styles. I have no spydercos a couple kershaws, a buck vantage pro, CRKT acuto ripple, and the one benchmade. Basically I've started with some entry level nicer production knives. I enjoy switching it up a bit so having 8-10 modern folders to rotate would not bother me. However there are about 10 more on my watch list... Hence the problem.

On a side note my largest folder is the Vantage. I am very interested in the larger folders such as the ZT 550/560, BM 810 contego, and others. How do people around you react to a 3.6-4" folder that you whip out to open a box or cut a burger?

It ends when you feel that you have found the knife to end all knives. Nothing wrong with buying and trying out different pieces from various manufacturers. Some will stick to low dollar off shore knock-offs, other stick with the regular production knives, and some develop an affinity for customs. Just be reasonable in your spending and you will be fine. My most inexpensive folder is a Opinel, it was a gift from a friend on the forums here and I won't part with it for that reason alone. The most expensive knives I own range fom $500-$900. Can't say I'd willingly part with those either. :D

Funny, yesterday I saw a picture of a knife I've always wanted here on this forum. A GEC lockback.
I actually said to myself, "This is it... it's all I've ever really wanted and I'll be done buying knives."
I've said that countless times in the past.

I guess it's over when the fat chick sings...

It doesnt end, but I take breaks so to speak. I will go a long time without buying one and then splurge. Binge buying is what I call it. I have a wife, baby and house now so I cannot buy what I used to. I sold well over 5K worth of knives to support my family when my wife was out of work, so she does not begrudge me of buying when I/We can afford it. Buy what you like and can afford, In the end they are just knives and there's no reason to miss a bill because of them.

I just ordered a Sebenza and an Alias II. I don't intend on buying anymore knives for a long time.. All we can do is hope.

As stated above buy quality and use it.
Will it end? I haven't seen it yet.
As you develop you slow down.
Then there is the world of custom knives.
The mind is the limit.
Most important: make friends.

You have to stop looking for it to end.

I thought I was pretty satisfied then Benchmde, out of no where, introduces their first ever flipper.

Well, you gotta have that.

Stay off the Internet is the only way it stops.

Good luck.

It ends when you get what you want. At least until the next one comes along... In your example you listed a mini grip and a ZT. Those two knives are different enough that price should not be making you jump from one to the other.

I caught myself telling myself this: I just bought an Emerson. If I had saved a little more I could have bought a CRK or Strider off the Exchange. I plan to take a little break for a couple months. If by chance I get anything new its going to be by trade mostlikely.

To answer your question its not going to end until you let it.

It doesn't end until you have stacks of unused knives stored away that you call a collection, and the only satisfaction you get is posting pictures of them on forums that when you read convince you of the merits of adding yet another knife to the "collection". For some the stacks of unused knives aren't enough to end it and it continues indefinitely at which time you begin to "specialize". If you don't believe me, I can post pictures of the stacks to prove it:-)

I am starting to increase the quality of knives I buy with every purchase... Maybe for a few exceptions for a couple that I really like the looks of (CRKT Nirk Tighe 2 and Boker Plus mini Vanquish). But otherwise my list is steadily ascending in the quality department.

I can hope that once my initial urges are satisfied that I can keep my spending in check. Might take some time, but I have been browsing for some time and dont have a want list that is too overly optimistic.

Thanks for all the advise so far guys.

In time, you will find THAT knife.
CQC7B for me but I went through lots of rotation with other folders. And, I discovered the CQC7B in 2002.

What I've learned about this hobby is that it is a journey. Some might say to buy quality right away, but I'm not sure that's the way to do it. You will learn something about yourself and your preferences with every knife you buy. If get really serious, you WILL end up with $400+ knives, and quality will become one of your guiding principles. But even at that price level there are many to choose from. Knowing what you want only comes through experience. So, my advice is to go slow. Buy a knife you like that is reasonably priced, use it for a bit. Your next knife should be in the next highest price range. Repeat. Continue until you are forced to sell your cheaper knives for the next higher price level. This will take time, but you will learn a lot and figure in what direction you want this hobby to go in.
