Was taught 10 & 2 but believe race drivers drive 9 & 3.

I drive a 'Vette and I prefer 9 & 3, radio off, and eyes fixed to the road. For the reason the OP stated, I'm having a helluva time getting my wife to break her steering wheel holding habit - left elbow braced on the left armrest while left hand at 7 or 8, right arm ACROSS the wheel with right hand at ELEVEN! If she had an accident, she'd break both forearms and parts of her head and face. She says she's always driven that way. I say she's lucky.

I used to be 10 and 2, till I hit a tree and when the airbag went off it blew my hand off the wheel and broke my thumb, (hey I hit a tree at 45 and totalled my truck and all I got was a broken thumb and some scratches, not bad ;)) so now I keep my hands more like 9 and 5, no paticular reason.

BTW I hit a tree and cut it in half with a Hyundai Santa Fe this SUV gets my safety endorsement.
