When is a small knife, too small?

This thread has the potential to be hairy, I THINK
Anything less than 3 inches is a compromise, and not entirely useful, when looking at a ruler, inches come together and don't seem big at all.

In 2011 I, for some reason, felt that I had to prove a point and then field dressed a moose with a Vic Classic. It worked (but I'm not sure I wanna do it again.... :) ).

Are you serious? I didn’t enjoy field dressing a good sized whitetail with a swisschamp or champion!
Yeah, had a friendly argument with another hunter about what knives you need and he was adamant that a gut hook and a knife with at least 5" blade was neccessary. The Vic was new and quite sharp so when the moose was down I took him up "on the challenge". Keeping a finger behind the blade most of the time I got it done but I had cramps in the hand and fingers afterwards.

Us wise guys have to work in a duty rotation, there are too many opportunities for one wise guy to even discover, much less jump on. That post occurred during my shift.

Let me assure you, many misspellings and incorrections go unjumped upon. I’m an old man, lacking the stamina for all the jumping that needs doing. If I only did half the jumping available, I’d have no time to eat or sleep, and I’d take valuable time away from important duties like beating dead horses and hammering home the obvious.

That said, if I believed that you were aspiring to be one of my peers, I’d have to reluctantly admit that I have failed to further myself among you. I would then calculate the fraction of regret and micro-givashiite to apply to that failure. Then I’d have to report the results to my fellow wise guys, who might require me to fill out a hurt feelings affidavit to share with the subforum at large.

Alas, I’m still too stuffed full of turkey to take all that on, and besides, I’ve got quite a backlog of jumping to catch up on.

Sorry, no rest for the wicked. Better luck next time.

PS: what color is your she-devil? Mine’s a gray and white tuxedo, size small.

It looks like so far based on answers, it really does depend on who you are and what you do. Small knives seem to be capable of as much as the user can manage.

Echoing a lot of folks here, depends on the task at hand, for me a longer blade allows me to slice through thick foam sheets easier and maintain the level of thickness I need for packing things up, but most often it's a smaller knife that is handiest.

This has a 2 1/2" blade and I find that it is quite handy as it doesn't get in it's own way while using...
