When is it appropriate to contact a custom knife maker about an order's status?

So I am buying my first custom from a maker I do not know and have no relationship with other than the few emails we've exchanged about designing the knife and the $200 ($25%) I put down to have the knife made. In the past the few customs I have bought were from makers who I knew and had no concern about bugging them about due dates. I was told 1-2 months is the ETA. I'm coming up on the 2 month mark now and haven't had any communication. I was hoping I could get some advice on when its appropriate to contact asking about the status of the knife's completion date. Two months to the day? A few days earlier as I am dying to know? Or is it appropriate to give a few weeks grace period past the (2) month mark. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

In my opinion, you paid the money, you have the right to ask for an update any time you want.

Just shoot him a email saying it is coming up on the completion estimate and you are wondering if you should get your cash together to close the deal. Shouldn't offend the maker and as you stated you have not been a pain in the butt. In the short couple of years I have been making I have only run into a few real headache customers . As a consumer having had many orders with makers I use that approach. If your patient most guys will be fine with status reports as long as they are civil.

I should think that a polite email inquiring about status and time frame would be perfectly acceptable.

I'd ask for a status update at (or near) the 2 month mark. Your agreement was 1 -2 months, so calling around that mark seems very fair.

JMO. :)
