When Is It O.K. To Cancel a Knife Order?

I agree, Keith. If the knife had not been started and no costs, or commitments to others like engravers, have been by the maker then maybe ask if the deposit can be used in the future or maybe even ask for the deposit back.

The key for me is has the knife project been started?

I kind of look at putting my name on a makers long wait list similar to going to a very crowded restaurant on Saturday night. The host at the counter may tell you that there is an hour and a half wait to be seated. If you tell her to go ahead and put your name on the list, I don't think this should mean that if you get tired of waiting or change your mind before your name is called that you can't get up and tell her that your leaving and have her remove your name. As long as I'm not seated and they haven't begun cooking my meal, nobody is really out anything. However, once the meal is started, I'm committed at that point.

If my knife project has not been started, cancelling doesn't seem unfair to me.

What about if

I am in another country
Been on the makers list for 2 yrs
Email the maker every anniversary
Last reply was a hike up on the price,
And a longer waiting period with the impression that he is not interested in my business.

I hate to even venture a guess as to why your dealings with this particular knifemaker aren't working out. Maybe it's time to get on a different maker's waiting list?

Yeah, that would qualify for being an example of one circumstance where it would be ok to cancel.
