When not to carry?

Is there any time when you guys feel it is inapproriate to be carrying?

I know that if I leave the house without some kind of blade, I just don't feel right. You know, cold sweats, nervous twitching, uncontrollable flatulence. It's not a pretty sight.

But, is there a time when you feel you shouldn't be carrying?

I carry at least a small SAK on me everywhere. The only places that I don't carry a knife are jury duty, airline travel, swimming and working out.

No, not really. But there is many "un-friendly places" because a knife (or knives) is always under my control. But I will abid with the law when it comes to carrying. I haven't started to civil unrest yet, and I don't want a perefectly good knife seized!

Basically the same as Frank. But I carry a knife while jogging (not swimming, unless its up north; I'll probably have a diving knife on me then).

I don't carry when I'm showering, swimming, sleeping (or not sleeping in bed;) ). I also don't carry in places where it is illegal such as the courthouse, jail (when called to transport a sick inmate to the hospital) or airport.

I don't feel inappropriate whenever it's legal to carry. However, I will pick a knife for an occasion ;) For something upscale, I'll go with a small custom slipjoint, for work, I'll stick with my Sebenza or my Delica, etc.

I think I'm with evryone else. I carry whenever it is'nt prohibited.

This brings up something I debated with my friend. For those of us who attend Church, do yo think it is ok to carry your blade their? I do'nt see a problem because I am not bringing it with ill intent.

The question of when is it inappropriate to carry a knife never occurred to me -- primarily because I can't imagine why it would ever be "inappropriate." I mean, whose criteria or judgment do you use to answer such a question? I carry a knife because a knife can be very useful. Who dares to question whether or why I carry one, or where and when? It's MY decision. I have a knife with me at ALL TIMES. I shower with one, I sleep with one. (Okay, I take it off my neck when I'm having sex. That's a concession I'm willing to make.) I think it falls to the knife-opposer to state a good reason why I should NOT carry a knife.

BTW, did you know that it is possible to put a Spyderco Delica inside the finger of a leather winter glove, put the glove in the basket at a courthouse metal detector, and then get through the detector clear and be reunited on the other side with your knife? In case you're wondering, no, I don't think that court is an inappropriate place to have a knife either. The only inappropriate thing would be to attempt something harmful to others with a knife. The intent makes the crime, not the possession of the tool.

Could you point me to a "very stainless" folder neck knife that if possible doesn't look as a knife? I must prepare for summer so it has to be able to endure getting in and out of Cl filled swimming pool and NaCl filled sea water, no needing more than night care.

I also don't feel right if I leave the house without a blade of some description.

Since carry here is completely illegal the only time I don't carry is in situations where I think I could get caught carrying.

airports, government buildings, places where there is a large police presence etc.

I carry my knife to church. I do not think I will ever need it there but I usually go out to eat or shopping right after. Another place not to carry a knife is a school. I have two boys in elementary school and I have to make a real effort to remember not to bring a knife when I go for student teacher conferences and other events. To be honest I usually forget the knife is even in my pocket since I carry one all the time.

I know that I always have a knife at church of course I'm alway at church Actually I'm a minister and I have no problem carrying one at all times. I feel that part of my ministry is to help educate these northern people's:D I always have my Mini-stryker on me and I have a delta-z tanto and a sak in my office and since I've gotten my 806D2 I carry it regularly. I used to preach with My Auto SOCOM in my pocket until it left me:( now its the 806D2's position.

Like others here, the only time I do not carry is when it is illegal to do so. Then, I carry as far as legally possible and leave my blade locked in my Jeep until I can get back to it. I have a rotation of EDC's and depending on where I am going and who I am going with, I pick an appropriate knife. Most days I carry a pocket clip folder or a multi-tool and lockback for work.

Going to church ? I still carry, but with a little more discretion. If I am carry a pocket clip I usually unclip and slide the entire knife into my pocket. ( I attend an older congregation and those little blue haired church ladies would flip seeing the top of a Buck Tac Lite.)

Thank you all for such great responses. The original intent behind my question was pretty well answered.

Last week I was a pallbearer in a friends funeral. As I passed my wife in the church, she noticed the pocket clip of my Spydie Harpy. Later, she asked if I ever leave my knife at home.

I am not a regualr church-goer, so I wasn't aware if wearing my knife there was the "right" thing to do. But, it looks like all of you have answered that for me.

Thanks again,
Kris

tisk, tisk... everybody knows Jesus dosent like knives. The only time I don't carry is in the bath and in bed...and sometimes during Sasturday morning cartoons I'll find myself Sebenzaless.. gasp!

I don't think it's ever inappropriate to have a knife... Well, not when having sex, and perhaps not when sleeping in my own bed (as distinct from camping out), but even then there is usually a small necker on the night stand. When I'm working out I carry my car/locker keys on a caribiner/ball-chain around my neck, so I just include a utilikey at the same time. Haven't needed the utilikey blade yet, but the glasses screwdriver has come in handy!

There are illegal circumstances of course, and while I'm pissed about all those arena (air travel, court houses, etc) rules, I do comply. I also match the knife to the circumstance. I don't wear a fixed blade to church or work, just a nice folder (usually small Seb. or something similar).

Alas, after being out of work for 6 months I'm now back working (thank God), but that also means the end of daily FB carry for me which I sorely miss, though not enough to trade it for work!

I would be extremely surprised if they even knew what it was, unless you pulled it out to use it.

That reminds me of the story where a teamster was cursing out the horses hitched to his wagon and a woman chastised him for using that kind of language in front of a lady. He replied that if she was a real lady, she wouldn't understand what he was saying!

I always cary when I leave the house. The only times I wouldn't is if I was going somewhere where it would be illegal (airport, etc) But I don't really go anywhere like that usually.

I also don't cary around the house usually. Well, not house but small 2 bedroom apartment. When I'm home relaxing I don't like to have anything in my pockets, not watch on, no belt on. Don't know why, but when I'm at home it just feels weird to have that stuff on. Plus, since its a fairly small place, a knife is never more then 5 or 6 steps away. As soon as I get ready to leave though, at least one knife is on my person, usually 2.

I carry absolutely everywhere I go, unless its illegal (and has serious consequences). Haven't gone swimming since a vacation at the gulf of mexico a few years ago ( weekly trip to the rain barrel's all the water I care for ;) ) and I carried a delica with me then.
Sleeping, I generally don't but there's a half dozen knives sitting on the table less than a foot away. (if I sleep with one, the others get jealous....pimpin aint easy  )
I can't really find an occasion when it would be "inbappropriate" because I don't do anything innappropriate with my knives. They are just tools, and I use them for constuctive purposes. God forbid I ever have to use one as a weapon, but even then I consider defending my life a constructive and worthwhile activity. Is it ever more polite to try and gnaw a package open with your teeth, or lay down and die, than it is to carry a knife
