When People Think They Know Swords

10kg?! I can usually explain things a lot better once I let people new to swords handle just my Cold Steel Two Handed Kukri. They say "wow this thing is a beast how much does it weigh?!" And I reply with "less than 2lbs..." They generally listen to me after that.

Course, there's always this one:

givee your friend the sixteen pound sword and for yourself a broom handle and see who gets hit and who gets tired and sore

So, I was talking to a fanboy the other day about a WoW sword replica he has and I was telling him that the blade he has is purely decorative and too heavy and poorly balanced to be used in really combat.

He replied by saying "The blade is high quality metal. I've tested it and it may be heavy but that weight will actually give you an advantage."

Why do you guys think people have misconceptions of what a functional sword is?

How exactly do you test a sword that is unsharpened (and recommended it NOT be)? Especially when it is described as "for display purposes only."

To the question about misconceptions, I would imagine the fact that there are so many wall hangers out there that look similar to real swords that many people think they are the same thing. Of course, there are many people that think that having the tool makes them the craftsmen. "If" they had a rifle with a big scope they could be a sniper. "If" they had a sharp sword, they could the same things a trained martial artist does.

I used to worry about that sort of thing. Now I don't.

I've discovered that there is a sort of continuum. There are those that think that they know about swords. Then there are those that think that they know more than the guys that think they know about swords. Then there are those that think that they know more than the guys that that think that they know more than the guys that think they know about swords. Then there are...

In short as with anything if you really study it you will learn new things. Over time you may discover that ten years before you knew nothing at all...

OP, take comfort knowing that when "fanboy" goes home and smacks the 80 year old oak in the yard just ONCE with that monstrosity he's gonna cry like a little girl,no way is that junk full tang.the only downside is the look on his smug 'emo-anime-dress-in-black-trenchcoat-calls-himself-connor-mccloud face wont be visible to us as the horror sets in that he's now wielding a handle with a broken off screw protruding from it.

I never stop learning about swords and blades in general. There are always new things to be learned and that's why I love it. By "test" I think he meant he dry handled it. Crimson. Did you say FUNCTIONAL Master Sword?! That's epic!

If I were cornered or tied to something, a person might be able to kill me with a 16 pound sword, but if I can move at all, I doubt anyone would be able to connect. And I am a large and none-too-fast target.
