Up here they're pretty much inedible in the summer cause of the salmon runs. Late fall seems to be ideal, cause they're fattening up, the rivers are lower, and the brush is thin, but it's almost impossible for me to get out at that time, cause of the screwed up work schedule. Guess I gotta deal with Spring bears, and hope I can get a shot off before they disappear into the brush.
Most folks up here don't seem to care for black bear. They kinda consider them more as "better than nothing" on an otherwise unsuccessful moose hunt. (Not that I wouldn't prefer a moose just for the quantity of meat, but at this point I can't afford to be choosy, I just need to kill some darn thing to stuff in the freezer!)
