Tonight was precluded by an especially long day. After taking a nap, I awoke with one of the worst charle horses in my life. I've had it for about 3 hours now, and it hasen't let up. I've begun thinking, even a some what painful and Imobilizing thing like this could absolutly ruin a trip.

What can you do if out'n'bout and something like this happens? Wait it out, try to rub you leg?

Hey Guys...

As I understand it is a buildup of Lactic(SP?) Acid in the effected muscle...

Eating a banana or two is suppose to help because of the potassium i the banana...

This is what I've been told anyway..

Yeah, I got up today, and I still can't put full presure on my leg. I'm thinking something more might have happend.

I get these in my calf muscle while sleeping. Hurts like hell for a minute or so. Can't do much but thrash about. Some are worst than others, but almost all of them leave me limping for hours to days with a soreness in that leg. I have never found a solution.

Kind of feels like my leg is completely tied down and the calf muscle is ripping itself apart.

Exactly!

that is what happend presisely. And I know I can't figure it out. It feels like I pulled muscles for a few hours, or like you said days sometimes.

Stretch the muscle while massaging it. Drink Gatorade. Once the initial spasm goes away.walk it off.Continue to stretch.
One thing I learned while doing sports medicine is that you can mix Gatoraid powder 1/2 strength, when drinking it if it tastes sweet, you don't need it. If it doesn't taste sweet, you are already have a good start on dehydration and electrolytes need replenishment.

Massage frequntly doesn't work, IME, because most people, myself included, don't know how to properly work a knot out. That's whhy you can get a degree in masso-therapy. I've tried getting rid of various crapms that way myself, and all it did was cause pain. It didn't do any damage, but the time could be better spent in a survival situation methinks. Just my .02

Uncle Charlie sucks.

Its your body telling you you did too much and need to get into better shape.

Like others said Gator aid diluted during and before the event will help some.

Massage it rough and relax it. then stretch the hell out of it.

Then take a couple robaxicet ( the acetaminophen & methocarbamol ones work the best for me) back pills as its a muscle relaxant for all muscles not just backs;). Works miracles and is even better if you know its going to happen and take them before. I take them when a 6 hr SAR mission turns into 24 without notice.

Skam

I've had people suggest coffee for the potassium though that probably wouldn't help right before a nap.

I strapped on my hockey skates for the first time in several years and went out for an hour or so without stretching first. Woke up that night with both calves in Charlie Horse agony at the same time. I had forgotten how many foul words I knew but I think I used some that would make a bosun blush.

Hyper extending the limb (gently) will reduce the cramp and a little preventive medicine like electrolites and potasseum as well.

i get them all the time due to fibromyalgia just like described. our water softner uses potassium instead of salt so i get plenty of potassium. i have tried quinine back when you could get it and bananas but neither helped. hyperextending does help sometimes as mkhop mentioned. i have had things get worse from doing this at times also. you might want to get checked for fibromyalgia. no cure, you just learn to live with it if thats the problem.
