When the worrying stops, knives get more fun.

I have actually been trying to get knives I like already used to decrease the hesitation to use them myself. If I know I want a knife for a user I will actively seek out a previously owned knife so I have no qualms adding to the character. It saves me some money as well. I don't get to take credit for all of the scratches, but I can certainly add my own when I want to.

I don't worry about messing up my Cold Steel Recon 1 (it is scratched to all hell), My Strider SnG, my Manix 2, or my Gayle Bradley.

This is the knife I have owned the longest. Bought it on a high school trip to Germany six year ago while I was in 10th grade. I'm graduating from college this May and its on my belt right now. I edc this a couple times a week, I carry it either on my belt in an open-top leather sheath or vertically in my back pocket along side my wallet. Its been on every camping trip done its share of whittling and food preparation. Used it in college for awhile as a primary food prep knife because I didn't have another kitchen knife that wasn't for butter. Cut down cardboard boxes just about every week, sharpen pencils, open packages. The inclusion of a few other basic tools is excellent, I can't tell you how many times I've use the awl, can opener, or driver for something that doesn't fit any of those descriptions. The blade is so thin that I can easily sharpen it to a significantly finer edge than my other knives but thick enough I have never broken or bent the tip or any other part of the edge. (Having a flat head driver also eliminates the temptation to use the tip for such tasks). The mirror finish handles wear pretty well and makes it easy to clean, just check out the mirror on that thing after 6 years of use.

(bonus points if you can figure out where I live).

If someone could please help me identify this model, I would appreciate it. I've looked around but don't think this is a current model any longer.

I prefer to purchase used. If a used model X knife sells for 80% of a new model X knife, then you saved yourself 20% up front, and if you go to sell it later, it's still a used model X and will still sell for around the same amount you paid for it, instead of losing the 20% on the sale that the original owner did.

This...

I'd like to think I'm the same and I do use my sebbi and I don't mind scratches here and there but I don't use it for anything that could do much damage to the edge. Scratched on the blade/handle don't bother me nor does typical dulling but I try not to chip/ding/really damage the edge much so I don't have to re-sharpen it, just touch it up.

Now my next most expensive knives, my BM 710 and Spyderco GB (big gap I know), I beat the hell out of them with zero regard to their appearance.

My EDC is my Ferret. I tend to like to cut stuff and use my knives pretty often. After the "traction coating" on this knife got scratches down to the metal I decided to sand and polish the whole grind area, convex the very edge and do a vinegar patina. It rides in my pocket everyday and is really useful. I definitely do not think twice before using it and love it all the more for that reason:

My BK2 is my workhorse. I have used it for just about anything imaginable and it has plenty of character for it. This blade is a tank and I never worry about it:

I have so many knives that I would love to just use and use, I wish I had more stuff to cut. My Emerson's though they scream to be used. I had some remodel work to do at home and this was my user. Cleaned up great and is again scary sharp.

I guess that if I had the resources, I would take an approach similar to the one used by southernknives. But alas such is not the case. However I realized that there is one exception, my EDC. It is a Frankenleek. Scales from a TiZDP and a blade and clip from a TG10 (titanium scales and s30v random blade with a black pocket clip). After looseing my last fav. And not being able to replace it I have become obsessed with "spares", so I have a primary EDC, spare doner knives to make another, if and when I break or loose the primary, and another set of spares on display, cause I think they are purty. But that is it otherwise every knife gets carried and used for at least a week or two just so I will know the knife

Good choice on the native 5. I love mine and used it everyday(except weekends that's when the dragonfly h1 comes out). Unfortunately for the native it's been put away for another user my benchmade 556. When I have a knife that sits in the safe I either sell it or give it to someone who will use it, but then again I've never owned a knife worth more than $180.

I have this problem until I get a new knife. The old new knife is used while the new one gets gawked at...until that time comes around for another new knife :)
