When to reach for the main blade?

As long as the knife is legal to carry I have no worries using it. I like to think that using it for an actual purpose in public might get some people passed feeling uneasy about knives and realize that it is a useful tool

You are served a salad at a fine eatery - but the lettuce, etc, needs finer chopping. Do you pull out your BRK&T T.U.S.K. or BM 171 Chopper?

I always carry a large folder clipped to my right front pocket, and a medium sized slipjoint in my left front pocket. The slipjoint gets the call around the public.

Pfffffft.... easy choice. Chopper all the way!

Seriously though, I don't usually carry more than one blade when out in puplic. I just use whatever I have, and if I'm worried about someone possibly getting scared, I'll be sure to open the knife more slowly and discretely, and perhaps choke up on the blade to keep it partially hidden in my hand.

Still, I have definately gotten "the stink eye" a few times, and a few nervous comments like "Wow! That's quite a blade!", or "What do you need that for?", But so far I've never had anyone screem "Oh my god! That psycho has a weapon!!!" ...yet. :o

I carry a Victorinox Cadet and a locking folder, right now the Böker Trance.

But for me my Cadet is my main folder perhaps because I get looks and remarks when using a locking folder.
The Trance is only for when around friends and I don't carry it when going to the city.

For me it's like this: my main blade is my go to blade, mostly out of muscle memory. My backup blade is for when I lose my main blade or if I have to use my gun hand for weapon retention. Muscle memory has me going for my main blade for everything so that in a stressful situation the draw will still be there like second nature. Then again I don't carry a junglas as a main blade...

Absolutely, sharpening is a part of maintenance. The issue is most people do not sharpen their knife everyday. During that time in between sharpening, a need for a very sharp blade may manifest and instead of having it at the ready, the main knife has been dulled by daily use.

I prefer to keep my main blade extremely sharp and use a secondary utility blade for daily tasks. Therefore, I am never without a perfectly sharp blade.

That is how I do it. Am I incorrect in thinking that way?

In my view, that is a little excessive. I use my folder for whatever needs cutting. I am not worried about having a super sharp knife. I've learned to carry a smaller knife, to take care of smaller tasks. I can't get it though, not using your knife while waiting to use your knife for something that requires a knife. Just enjoy your knives, don't think so much is my perspective.

The slipjoint knife I carry is a whittler pattern. It has three blades. I usually use the wharncliffe blade and keep the other two razor sharp and in reserve if I need a razor blade to cut with.

I only carry 1 knife, now it is a wenger s10 my wife got me which is perfect. People don't seem to get worked up over a SAK, but it still has a locking blade which I like.

Pretty much the same for me. I use the main blade of my Canoe slipjoint for eating, and the pen blade for almost everything else. If I know I need to use my knife more than usual though e.g. cutting up cardboard or going bush, I'll bring a dedicated heavy folder or fixed blade for that.

I have a pretty little 2" fixed blade I use for everything. People look at me funny, but not in fear. If I snap open the para2, on the other hand . . . well, let's just say people tend to get concerned.

There will always be some people who gasp at the sight of a knife someplace other than the kitchen, but if everyone is giving you look of terror when you get out your edc, maybe your edc is overkill?

So is your Para 2 overkill? From your post it would seem to be.

I usually only carry one knife. Amusingly I've gotten more comments on my Caly 3 than my Umnumzaan or Sebenza, and I work in an office full of women.

What I find interesting is how many people call their larger knife a "main," or "primary," blade, while mainly or primarily using their "secondary," or "backup".
Exactly. I carry two knives - A Leatherman Juice and a Graham Stubby Razel. The Leatherman gets used for about 99% of my daily cutting chores, so technically, it's my main blade. No one gives me looks or questions why I would carry it, it looks like a tool, has a short blade, and is bright purple! The Razel I use for my tougher cutting/prying jobs, but ususally not around people (it's a fixed blade! GASP!)

Quite honestly, I think that most of us on this forum could get by with just a Vic Classic, but where's the fun in that?

perhaps it is inappropriate to snap-open a huge overkill blade for a minor task, but i think getting the 'stink-eye' from sheeple if preferable to getting a 'seriously, dude, wtf' look of amusement from another fella who knows better and sees me whip out a pair of scissors from my man-purse...

Just sayin'... :d

rofl!!

Its amazing how many people do not carry a knife at all. my company has around fifty floor employees and I know maybe one that has a knife with them. Anytime someone needs something done guess who they go to.... me.

Same here. Hardly anyone I know or work with EDC's any kind of knife. A good friend of mine actually farms for a living and has NEVER owned anything more than a few dull kitchen knives, and a disposable blade box cutter that hasn't come out of his tool box in years! ....Go figure.

Alright, I got a good chuckle out of this... :D

I only carry one at a time and have no issues taking it out. I typically carry the CQ7 and have taken it out in all kinds of stores from Macy's to the local flea market. Wife kind of hates when i do that lol

I thoroughly enjoy my knives and the way I handle them. I have been doing the same for years.

I like to have an extremely sharp knife with me which is my main blade. I carry a smaller knife for daily cutting tasks.

I am not waiting to use my main blade. It's better described as I am ready to use my blade and it is extremely sharp when or if I need to do so.

Does this not make sense? Am I the only one to execute this type of knife carry plan?

I agree with what you are saying. Only three people at my work carry a knife. Not one of them carry a sharp one. They buy a knife and never sharpen it. All three knives look like they were used to chop steel bolts.
