When to start sharpening D2?

Hi everyone. So, I got my D2 Millie a week ago, and it's totally awesome, probably the most satisfying knife I've ever owned. Anyway, I used it for a pretty intense whittling sesh over the weekend, and it still cuts paper and plastic very smoothly, but it is no longer shaving sharp. Now, if this were VG-10, I would be content to just keep on using it until it gets dull, but I hear D2 is much harder to sharpen. I'm not the greatest at sharpening, but I have a sharpmaker with the standard white stones which I've had decent results with.

So, the question is, should I sharpen it now, before it becomes too difficult down the road, or should I not risk screwing it up this early in the game and keep on using it?

Thanks!
Mark

In my opinion, it is much easier/faster to maintain the edge of a blade than to spend the extra effort scratching away on the whetstones to restore it when it is dull.

Short answer...go for it.

Do it now or regret it later. The Sharpmaker is less than ideal for sharpening a thoroughly dull blade in any steel, and D2 could take hours to bring back. (That's one reason I use diamond hones.) Touching it up when it is just a little less than shaving sharp will be much easier.

Get the ultra fine stones for the sharpmaker and sharpen once a week,8 to ten licks a side. It works for me. I usually use junk knives or snips on plastic.
