When Tom Krein meets a Benchmade...

I had hoped my comments wouldn't de-rail this thread but unfortunately they have. I just marvel at the thought of having to modify a high dollar knives right out of the box. If I was the customer having to do this (to make the knife meet my demands) I would probably find myself a little on the shady side of PO'ed. Especially when there are other manufacturers out there that are shipping knives that already meet those demands (right out of the box).

Anyhoo, getting the thread back on topic... Good to hear Krein's take on all this. He was, after all, the fixer here. Sounds like he did a fantastic job. Maybe we can get a photo of the factory sheath next to Krein's custom sheath?

Back to the original post - nicely modified Nimravus, an already nice knife. Krein surely does know sharp, based on a knife of his that I played with. Good man with kydex too.

In some cases the knife might have some of the features you want, handle, blade design and steel, but just be off in terms of one of more aspects like grind depth or hardness. As you get more extreme in your demands for performance you tend to end up modifing everything. It isn't really a critism of the product unless a large volume of people are having to do it.

Congrats on your knife. Its nice and Tom made it really nice.

Nothing wrong with modifying your own knife. It doesn't mean that its a bad knife, you just want it different and to your own specs.

I had Dan Koster rehandle an HI Bowie for me, not because it was a bad knife, but because after using it for a little while I felt that a different handle would work better for me because the particular handle dug in to my particular hand.

Just spent 600$ on a used Colt Python. Shoots superbly with no modification at all. I still intend to send it to Cylinder & Slide for a action job/tune-up and for them to install their version of the Colt/Eliason sights. Maybe a set of Herretts custom tailored wood grips too. Not necessary but it will make me happy. Same theory applies here.

As for Tom Krein's work - superb. I was very impressed with a little clip point bowie push knife he had at the Blade show. In my opinion he does superb work.
