When using a coating to seal wood scales, how do you keep it off the tang?

I realize that some woods need coating with BLO or Tru-Oil or even urethane for their finish. My question is, how do you keep the coating off the tang while finishing? Or, do you coat and finish the handle, then go back and sand the tang edges down to remove the coating. Or...is it just left there and buffed with the rest of the handle?

See, I thought about using blue fine line tape used in automotive painting for laying out graphics/flames but thought it would leave a noticeable "edge" where the coating butted up against the tape. I guess the tape edge could then be sanded down lightly if there was enough there to cause a problem.

I've often wondered about this question too. I've been taping the wood with 3m blue tape and using steel wool on the tang. The taping is a little tedious but it works. Mace's idea is the best I've heard though. I'm going to try that next time.

Usualy I will just use the blue masking tape and concentrate on one side of the handle at a time. I'll apply the oil then while its still wet pull the tape, then kinda smooth it out with a finger.
It's a LOT easier on a hidden tang/solid block handle.;)
