Hey all,

I am looking at purchasing a knife online that happens to be made by one of my favorite makers but the owner of the knife says he purchased it in 1988 and that the blade steel is D2. Now I am new in knives, within the past 5 years, but was D2 really made back then? Any advice would be appreciated.

D2 has been used since WWII.

It was originally used in punch-press tooling for good hardness & wear resistance due to the high carbon, high chromium makeup. It has a few other things in it chemically, but basically, it's a good, hard, fairly tough steel, which has stood up well to time & is a good choice for knife making. Look it up online & read about where it came from, how it's used still & what people say about knives made from it. 1988 isn't very long ago for some of us....

Thank you for the information. It was the year after I was born so maybe I should have stated it differently. Does that sound about accurate as to when they started using it in knife making?
