When was your last bite?

How long has it been since you were bitten by a blade? It’s been quite awhile for me, and yet I managed it today. Oh, it wasn’t much of a bite, but it was enough to draw a fair amount of blood.

I’ve been sharpening knives for over fifty years now, and they bit me enough early on to make me very careful of those nasty sharp edges. Not careful enough, apparently.

As I said, I cut myself this morning, and it got me to thinking about when the last time was. Unfortunately, I can’t remember: it’s been that long. How did I cut myself today? If I knew, I’d tell you, but I don’t. A moment of inattention, I suppose, and then there’s blood coming out of my finger. I didn’t even feel it... it just started bleeding. This just goes to show that no matter how experienced you are, no matter how careful you think you’re being, accidents can happen.

How long has it been for you? Just curious.

Not long. I cut my finger fiddling around with a Case Tuxedo a couple weeks ago. I was wiping down the blade and the thing came through the cloth and bit me. It had been a couple years without cuts before that.

It's funny, I handle and use knives constantly, but I almost never cut myself. My wife, on the other hand, doesn't care about knives, and she cuts herself ALL THE TIME. I think the more time you spend around sharp edges, the more you are aware of them, and you cut yourself less often.

Two weeks ago.
Scraping a deer hide.

Was using my RAT 7 to scrape meat bits and membrane from the inside of the hide and split my thumb open.

Nothing bad--even though it bled like stuck pig. Just held tightly around the base of my thumb and held it above my head to slow the flow.

It clotted, I wore a band-aid and finished what I was doing.

You know, think you're right: the more time you spend around sharp edges, the more you are aware of them, and you cut yourself less often.

Now that you've jogged my memory, I might have been wiping down the blade at the time, but I'm not sure.

I wasn't even doing anything real like that, just sharpening a knife for a buddy.

I can't remember the last bite from a knife but my bow saw bite me in July. Needed 5 stitches.

That's just as bad. Worse, actually. Do all these blades just decide to jump up and bite us because we're not paying enough attention to them? Sometimes I wonder.

I've been lucky (or attentive) for awhile now. I think it has been a few years since I had a decent cut from a knife.

I'm actually halfway looking forward to my next one, just for the chance to close it up with some superglue.

Oh boy, it's been a while. I think it must have been summer, 2008. Fillet'd the knuckle of my left thumb open to the bones with my camillus demo knife. Kinda forgot I had a knife in my right hand.

Haven't done it since.

You know, I've been wanting to try that myself. I don't think I want to cut myself again just to test it, but next time (and there will be a next time, I'm sure), I'll try to remember.

Lessee, had my Yojimbo partially open in my pocket last Sat. and poke my leg so that a drop of blood came out -my fault because I wasn't carrying it clipped.

Haven't had a real incident in years, but I often will shave little bits on my fingers, but not enough to draw blood. Usually happens when I am doing close-up work, or sharpening knives (I tend to do several at one time so I may lose focus).

I think that's when I've been bitten most, too: when I'm sharpening several knives at one time.

i took a chunk out of my palm with a spoon knife a few weeks ago, it was a nice clean, and very painful scoop right out of the meaty bit of my palm

A week, give or take a day or 2. I cut myself every week, doing something. Most of the time, I don't know it until I see the blood.

Ouch. You know, I'm somewhat surprised that we "knife people" don't cut ourselves even more often than we do, considering how often we handle and use knives.

Layed my thumb open last weekend cutting a worm out of a goldenrod gall for fish bait. Was using the sheepfoot on a SAK.--KV

It's extremely rare for me to cut myself with a knife, even as much as I use them. I scrape my knuckles much more often when wrenching bolts than using a knife. It's probably been at least a year or two since I've had a cut from a knife.

dawsonbob, Looks like we both have been at it for some time (about 50 years for me too). Maybe we become over-confident after doing some things for so many years. :) I don't remember when I cut myself last, but occasionally I will get a little scrape or nick from a blade (usually in the woodshop with sharp woodworking tools) when in a hurry or so focused on what I am doing that I forget about the tool being used.

Heal quickly!

Yeah, I can't remember when I cut myself last, either. It's been quite awhile though; a few years at least. I'm not talking about those little nagging nicks and scrapes, but actual cuts that cause a fair amount of blood to leak out of your system. And I agree, they seem to happen most often when we're focused on the task, and not the tool. I'll try to be more attentive in the future (I think that's what I told myself last time, too).

Thanks, I will try to heal quickly. I don't want people to see that I did something stupid.

When I used stones to sharpen, I used to occasionally leave the tip of a finger sticking up past the surface, and catch it with the blade. Haven't done that in a while, but, then, I mostly use sandpaper/mousepad to sharpen any more.
