When will Spyderco offer stonewashed blades?

I always read about stonewashed blades being more rust prone on this site. I've experienced it too on a pair of stonewashed 440C Gerbers I owned around 10+ years ago. I prefer a smoother finish like satin, even on non stainless steels, as it seems stonewashing would leave larger micro-holes/pocks that woud be more prone to rust.

Well, I personally would welcome a Spydie with a stonewash blade. I have a ZT0551 and that kind of finish is gorgeous IMO.

Not sure how that rumour got started. Stonewashing is very rust resistant and is a much smoother finish than a machine satin finish. Of course, a lot depends on the steel but you can bet a stonewashed S30V knife is very rust resistant!

The FRN UKPK and Standard Manix 2 are stonewashed, aren't they? Edit:I checked, they are. Quite nicely and subtly. It's nice for SOME saber ground knives but other than that I think its unnecessary.

Honestly, I think it's a bit of an overstatement to say "we're all dying for them"...I'm not, and most people on the spyderco forum never mention wanting stonewashed finishes. I'd rather have a nice satin finish like they already do. And IMO a more polished finish will do a lot to prevent rust spotting and pitting. I'd rather have that, plus, stonewashing doesn't do much for me (they way Spyderco does it on the UKPK is nice). Stonewashing creates a bunch of little crevices that collect contaminants.

I think if you asked the majority of frequent spyderco buyers, they'd say they are fine with the finishes Spyderco offers...plus, I'm not into paying extra just for a finish that deceases corrosion resistance and IMO doesn't really add anything to most designs (it's nice for sabre grinds, but FFG's don't need stonewashing, they look better with the highest polish available like satin. IMO an FFG with stonewashing looks tacky)

Plus, as rmmatt said, the smoother finishes increase the ease with which a blade will go through a cutting medium.

I'd love a stonewash.

All this business about rust is ridiculous. I've never oiled my 1095 blades and they NEVER rust. EVER.

The finish shouldn't matter, if your stainless is rusting you're just not taking care of your knives.

When will Spyderco start making stonewashed blades? We're all dying for them....

Who is this "we" you refer to?

As I recall, Sal responded to this question one of the times it came up (happens about once a year). Stonewash finish is a cost-cutting measure on the knives where it is used. He thinks it looks cheap. I agree. To me, stonewash looks like something done instead of finishing.

To each their own, but that's not been my experience. Just because you don't put your knives through the same stuff does not mean that a simple carbon steel like 1095 will not rust from looking sideways at it. I've gotten red rust to show up on the uncoated edge of my Izula after just two hours of freshwater fishing, where I was wiping the blade dry before sheathing it. Easy to remove with a quick sharpening and wipe down, but still red rust. Here's the thread that left a bad taste in my mouth recently.

That ZT S30V rusted. Red flag. I have a fair few folders in S30V, and I'm familiar with how rust resistant it is. My Military has been left with deer blood on it for the majority of a rainy day when I spent some time working deer check stations. The thought of rust never even crossed that satin finished blade's mind. In fact, the only blades that rusted in the thread seem to be stonewashed stainless. 13c26n 14c28n are quite rust resistant too. While I do take good care of my blades, that isn't always possible depending on what you're doing or where you're at.

Everybody has different tastes, but I'm still a little wary of stonewashing. Hopefully someone more knowledgable on knife manufacturing can weigh in. :)

Those knives are bead blasted, not stonewashed. Bead blasting is probably the least rust resistant finish. For an example of stonewashing check out the Ritter Griptilian.

My emerson stonewashed knives rust easily under the thumb plate. It's caused by just the moisture on my thumb. The only thing i like about stonewashed finish is it's ability to hide scratch marks.

Not at all.... I'm sure its a common misconception. Beadblasted blades are a dull battleship gray in colour whereas stonewashed blades have a satin sheen to them that is very attractive. Its an extremely smooth finish. Machine satin finished blades like the Spydies still have very fine grooves in them (some more than others, like the M4 Millie). But stonewashing is completely smooth to the touch. I tried to get a pic of my stonewashed Pohlforce Brave One in D2 to show you what it looks like but the camera flash made it very tricky. Not enough natural light left unfortunately...
