its bad.

I got a call today from my daughters daycare. It seems she took a good spill while playing kickball and hurt her arm. I was eating lunch about 45mins away from the school, so I called Lady and said, go check it out, and call me back.

Lady called me 15mins later, and said, we're on our way to the doctors office, meet us there.

I hung up and pulled into the Doc's office, 30mins later. As soon as I got there, I knew it was broken (seen way to many of them, and treated too many of them) The Dr. hadn't been in to see them yet. My assessment told me the radius was broken, through, but the ulna seems to be intact. There could be some cracking, maybe a chip, but not broken.

1 1/2hr later, we had the xrays back, and it seems I still got it, radius was broken through, ulna was intact, but there could be a chip dislodged. Off to the Orthopaedic Surgeon. Surgeon says no chip, no cracks, ulna is good to go, but we need a splint for a week to let the swelling out, and 4 weeks in fiber glass. She says she wants purple.

I'm really sad, right now. Broken bones, scuffs, and scrapes are all part of the "kid experience" IMO, but Shy's upset. No more soccer this season (she cried hard about that), and she's worried that she won't be able to write with the cast on, and she thinks she's gonna fail her classes.

I told her school is gonna be good, her handwriting will look worse, but she'll be able to make due, she won't fail.

Soccer is a total wash out this season, and she feels like she let the team down. That and she wants to play.

I'm pretty bummed out for her, as a Dad, you just want the best for you kids, and when they hurt, you hurt too. Gotta get her mind off the soccer thing, I think I'll try ice cream. And a shopping trip, she's gonna need some new clothes to match that purple cast.

Thanks for reading, just needed to vent.

ETA, I'll post some pics of the cast when she gets it, along with her new knife, I think I'm gonna get her

Glad she will be ok big picture but the resin I wanted to post was to say I very impressed that she is up set about "letting the team" . In to days world it is getting rare for kids to understand both commitment to a team and the need to put that ahead of them selves. It sound like she is being razed well and as to the arm, this too shall pass and I say that as some one that has a reserved packing space in front of the E.R. At the children's hospital. " I do wish the boy's would learn fear"

Thanks Dan, it means alot.

I too know what it is like to be injured and not be able to perform for my team and it sucks. She can still support her team by being there. Being on the sidelines cheering them on, getting them water when needed, gathering warm up uniforms when new players take the field. Heck, she can have her team sign the cast and make it into a luck charm of sorts.

If you keep your chin up, so will she.

I'm impressed with your medical knowledge, I doubt I would have known what which bone was broken just by looking at it. I was lucky enough to somehow not break any bones as a kid, but still feel bad for those of my friends that had them broken more than enough. Send her the Beckerheads best wishes, and tell her to heal up quick. Being injured is lame :(.

Also, I played soccer pretty competitively for 15 years (through the end of high school state championships my senior year), and I had a number of kids on my teams that played with broken bones. I'm not sure about elbow casts (what she'll have most likely right?), but I know that for broken wrists and things like that you can get "air" casts that they'll let you play soccer with. The big issue is if they're dangerous to the other players, but as long as they don't consider them dangerous (aka, a blunt instrument), and the doctor says they can play, I've seen it happen. So soccer season MIGHT not be a wash :).

Also, she can still go to practice, help set up cones for drills, and other basic stuff, and still feel part of the team. Also, if she can't play, give her a cool soccer trick to try to learn or something, that she can use to occupy herself when the other kids are running the drills at practice. For example I used to juggle the soccer ball like everywhere I went, and did it at practice the few times I was injured and couldn't actively participate. That served me well, because my ball handling/trapping skills were higher than most of my peers. And juggling you can do even with one arm :).

Hard to see your kids hurt, Glad shes ok Moose... well as ok as she can be with a broken arm.
My little one slipped in the tub and smacked her eye and got a 3 inch cut in her brow and eyelid that needed stitches.
It was everything I could do to not hit the doc when he stitched her up, because she was NOT happy while he was doing it.
I knew he wasn't doing anything wrong, and god love him, he did an amazing job with the stitches( Turns out he used to be a plastic surgeon ) but damned if everything in me wasn't screaming STOP HURTING MY KID !
Gotta say though Good on ya for your daughter being a great kid its a measure of the parenting you and your wife have done.
Lots of kids now a days are raised by the tv, clearly not yours 8-)

I've had medic training, and I work with some EMT/First Responders. We BS about stuff all the time.

Doc says no soccer until we get the cast, and I call the head of our region, and she can't play as long as she has a cast on. 4 weeks in the cast, she'll get it off, right after the last game of the end of season tourny.

Thanks for all the support guys, I really appreciate it.

As parents it is always difficult when our children are injured. Somehow their injuries always hurt me more than my own injuries - so I most definitely understand your need to vent.

She is obviously a selfless, caring individual who puts the needs of others in front of her own. That speaks volumes about her - and you.

Tell your daughter that there are lots of us who are wishing her well and that we admire her dedication to others.

An Ice Cream would be nice. Get yourself one too - you deserve a pat on the back for being such a good father.

Agreed to all of this, especially the last part.

And also, sounds like the rest of the season will be a wash :(. I'm sure her team will be sad to hear they're down a star player :(. I was always sad when i had to miss a tournament game, felt like I was letting people down. However, still going to the games and practices for support would be great. What position did she play?

It would also be cool to get something together for her from the BH's and send it to her. I know thats not the "normal" way we're supposed to honor the mod... but I'm sure she'd appreciate it :).

Sorry to hear brother. Kids will keep you on your toes. Been there done that.

Bigger picture - Sounds like she'll be ok. long term.

Keep the cast ... you'll find it one day, shake your head and wonder where it all went. Trust me.

She's lucky, got some folks who care. Good on you.

Hate to see kids (get) hurt - makes you feel so helpless. I'm sure she'll be just fine in time and eventually it will become one of her war stories.

Soccer can wait 'til she heals. Her family and friends will make the time fly by and before she knows it she will be 110%.

That sucks, but make the best of it and try to take her outdoors or just do stuff in the backyard, teach her survival stuff, knots, navigation, etc etc if she is into that stuff- she might not be. Hope she gets better fast. Make her a scratcher for the cast.

IMO the best thing to do is be there for her, and I know you'll do that. I know it sucks. I was carrying my son down the stairs this one time and when I got to the last step I slipped and landed on his ankle. Needless to say I broke it. We rushed to the emergency room and got him casted up. I felt really bad; he had just starting to walking at the time, and now he was forced to scoot around on his arse. I did everything I could to help him with anything and everything he needed.

Keep her happy and it will go by fast for her. Good luck brotha!

Sucks she is out for the season - agreed broken bones are a part of being a kid. Is there an indoor league in your area - might be an option for winter.

Wow... just got back from emergency room.....16 yr old son fell on skateboard..... Wrist was looking funky and some pain..... fracture in growth plate at end of radius.... going to orthopedic tomorrow for more complete evaluation......I joked with him that he had out... into my Becker budget........ the things we do for our kids.... lol

Thanks guys, it really helps.

I had to cut her outta her shirt tonight, to get her in some night clothes, but there is a bright ray of sunshine.

I called her coach and even though she can't play in official games, she can practice, and practice she will. I gotta stitch up a neoprene pad to cover her cast when she scrimmages, but her coach said "Oh yeah, she can practice".

She's happy about that, and is looking forward to getting the cast on, so she can hit the pitch again.

Wo0t!!!

Hope she has a speedy recovery!
I remember when my youngest broke his arm. He took it well, until he was told that he wasn't allowed to play during recess. Got over it when his friends sat out with him. :)

Four kids now and very little injuries by count thank god. When my four year old was two he fell on a broken glass and it cut all the way down to the bone. I have to tell ya I was freaking out, all I could do was get to get pissed to keep my sanity. Poor little guy had to have twenty two stitches! Yep it was pretty awfull to see and have him go through. Luckily he is a tough kid and was back on one foot and the brace they put him in. Didn't really slow him down much.

Enough about hurt kids...you're harshing my buzz..

She deserves a BHK Bushbaby!!!

Kay and I are sorry to hear about it man. She's young and strong though and you'll turn it into a character builder.
