When you "know" what you want, but can't pull the trigger (recommendation thread)

So I'm stuck.

There are several knives I want but just can't pull the trigger on one.

Benchmade 761- Awesome design, great steel in M390 but I'm not a tip down kind of guy (without an assist) and the clip is big

Spyderco Southard - great steel again but pretty big and I'm feeling a smaller knife ATM. The rumored Ion may be the answer but I hate waiting.

Sebenza - Great fit and finish. Carries well and has a small option. Downside is the blade steel is OK, does not like steep angles or getting worked.

ZT0562CF - I've wanted one for a while but they aren't easy to find in the price I want to pay for one. Bigger than I'm feeling but an M390 slicing machine would be fun.
I thought about going to the XM but in my head it's not worth it with the collaboration knives working so well.

About me. I like sharpening knives to steep angles and cutting stuff up until I get bored. I use all my knives for whatever task comes up. This year I had a blast slicing up Christmas boxes into ribbons with my S90v 940-1 and it staying sharp as opposed to my S30V getting dull last year which bummed me out a little.

Any input?

What do you mean getting worked? If you mean getting used I'd have to disagree. It's not S90V but I used mine all day on Christmas Eve cutting pipe insulation full of sand, mud, and other grit and it did just fine. A few swipes on my jeans and it was back to hair popping sharp. Not sure about steep angles though as I reprofiled mine to 20dps. You might look at the Manix 2 in S110V.

Your going to end up owning them all sooner or later so just do what I do and prioritize. Decide which you want first and work your way through your list. Sometimes I'll get one knife much sooner than I thought just because some smoking deal comes along. I try to keep my list about 5-10 knives long and as I buy some I add some to the list so it always stays about the same.....I can't seem to get ahead :-).

Yes I know how you feel, I want to purchase a Bark river fixed blade but I live in the city and a fixed blade isn't appropriate so I'm looking into folding knives instead despite my feelings for a fixed blade.

purchasing a knife is hard.

I have the Manix in S110v. I reprofiled it to 15 DPS then spent the next few weeks cutting everything from branches, to ikea furniture boxes, and fish (including several bags of frozen bait fish). I gave up when a new knife came and it's been slicing through fish and whatever comes its way since without being retouched.

I'm currently working on trying to wear down M4 and S90v blades.

I gave up on M390 as my 586 is still on its factory edge and still slices and dices like the first day. When I get some time I'm going to regrind it down and start over.

Do you have an S30V or S35VN blade?

S35VN

I had an M390 Ritter Grip that was nice. It was better than Sebenza on edge retention but not so much so that I was amazed. I have a fixed blade made by Big Chris in 10V. Now that steel is impressive. You may take a look at the Spyderco K2 if it's not too big.

The k2 is a beast. It's a little too big. I think my Contego is my upper limit as far as size goes.

I thought about the Slysz bowie for a while too

That one caught my attention also. If you go that route let us know what you think. I have a Ferrum Forge Ferox on the way. Not sure what to expect from the 4V but if it's anything like the S90V or S110V I've used I'll let you know.

Sunyata I'm Soakin' up what yer spillin'. It really does depend what your intended use is or if you just want to be prepared for a myriad of tasks. Then there's also just plain acquiring a new gadget. Then there's budget. One knife that rings this bell for me is the Benchmade 940-1. S90V is obviously a fine steel but it is far from a do all blade material. In my use I have and would shy away from using S90V for something that may nick the blade because it is seriously difficult to fix. ...And $250 is just a couple nights out at the bar, financially, away from what I would consider a better all around knife in pretty much every way... a Sm. Sebenza. But I already have one of those... So maybe a Microtech Ultratech?? The fun factor is high and the build is high quality. I'm not pumped about Elmax but this knife would not be one I would throw in my pocket with "preparedness" in mind...wait... What did I just say??? Damn. I guess an Ultratech's out too.
Honestly, as far as folders to I've had probably 75 variations pass through my hands. The only two I'm completely stoked on are Sebenzas and Strider SnGs. I realize anymore this is boring but I don't like knives with corners cut... or corners added.

I have a 940-1 too. It spent all day on Christmas cutting boxes to ribbons for fun. All different ways. With the grain against it, long ways, short ways diagonal ways.
