When you realize how much you spend on knives...

I hear you 100%. Most of my money is in knives and guitars. My favorite guitar and favorite knife both cost nearly the same, which is to say more than my bike (motorcycle), or all of the (non amplifier or guitar related) electronics in my house (trailer actually) combined. People have to have their hobbies. Makes life fun.

I Drink cheap beer and have a crappy phone so I can carry nice knives and play fast guitars.

I haven't quite gotten to spending the same on a knife as my guitars ... but I have a couple firearms that would fit that catagory ... so I can understand why if you could and wanted to spend that on a knife that someone would.

Coming from a guy who collects analog hifi and mechanical watches, why can't you imagine TVs as a hobby? Old TVs are an active collector's market, didn't take long to find a BF equivalent for them.

My point again is that everybody has stuff that they spend too much on and cherish and hope to have forever.

I guess you're right. I didn't know there was a collectors market for vintage TV's, although I can't imagine why other than as an investment. As far as hifi, I don't collect it, I listen to it. If I can afford to upgrade over time, I do.

I never really thought about it much. I can tell you roughly how many knives are in my collection but really couldn't price it as I don't keep track and have accumulated a collection over the years. Keep in mind that a lot of your knives probably depreciate less quickly than a TV so you can always liquidate your collection, or parts of it, if you needed the cash. You wont ever get near what you paid unless its a rare knife or a collectors piece but for quality knives, you should be able to get a fair price, especially if it's a high-demand/low supply item or an expensive item that someone is looking to buy used(like a Chris Reeve).

This year I haven't made many purchases or trades. Been busy with work and bought a new motorcycle so my money has been going into that. Motorcycle and knives are what I spend most of my 'toy' money on after I pay the bills and put money into savings etc. Some people will put down a couple grand on a cruise or a vacation. I usually prefer a few knives or new exhaust for the bike. Everyone spends their discretionary money differently. Some people would consider collecting knives a waste of money. I consider spending money on a cruise a waste of money. When youre done all you have is memories. I have goods. And I can go down to the beach and swim and look at the water..lol

I try not to think about it too much, try to save for what I want, trade for what I can't afford and I love to buy vintage antique folders from fleamarkets, estate auctions and yard sales. Bein' from NEPA with several major knife manufactures within a couple of states. Case, Queen, Schrade and over the last hundred years as many companies called PA, Jersey and New York home leavin' 1000s of vintage knives in great to mint condition floating around and millions of lesser quality or should I say less than near mint examples available for a few $. Here's some examples of knives I've bought over the years for under $20. (Keep in mind this is for more traditional patterns but not always.)

I also have a great whisky collection I started a few years ago. I get a different maker every 2 weeks and my collection is 1 half empty bottle now...Hobbies are fun and part of being human....I think

Never had any regrets with spending on tools.....such as a knife
Can't take money to the grave....spend on what makes you happy in the in meantime

My wardrobe is mostly second-hand store scores.
My cars have almost always been at least 15 years old and in some state of disrepair.
I spend about $50 a month on groceries. I almost never eat at restaurants.
I work out at home so I don't need a gym membership.
I wait 1-2 years to buy games so they're $20 instead of $60
And yet,
I have something like $200 in sharpening equipment and $500-1200 in knives in my rotation, which is always changing.

Gotta have your priorities.

I am reminded every time I open my large Spyderpac and that is only part of my collection. I don't really watch TV much and have had the same 37" Vizio for over ten years. Besides knives I am very pragmatic and sort of a minimalist. I spend most of the rest of money on my home and on homesteading. Knives are far and away my biggest indulgence and the only time I really partake in consumerism.

For us. People spend thousands on and cherish their TVs, or wine, or watches, or whatever they are into. We think they are nuts, they think we are nuts.

This. My boss is a big on smoking a pipe. He has some beautifully made pipes with exotic materials and beautiful finishes. He spends lots on pipes, tobacco etc... i see it as an expensive way to get tongue or throat cancer. He sees my knives as an expensive way to cut myself from time to time.

Yes, priorities are important and my No. 1 priority is paying the utility bills, mortgage, and any car payments I might have. Hard to believe you can eat on $50 a month... I spend that much in cat food alone (more actually). It seems I blow about $300/month on vet bills alone. Been thinking about selling some of my older un-used knives.... probably could sell off enough to make a car payment, perhaps two. That would be a good thing and I wouldn't miss them since I seldom look at them. Then I can be like a lot of you guys and talk about what I used to own. Sorry.... I haven't sold any knives and I'm working up to it. ;)

Sounds to me like you are both right.

I once went shopping, spent like $200on a couple shirts. I had such buyers remorse that I returned them. Later that day I purchased a $200 knife and felt no anxiety at all. It’s easy to deduce that my wardrobe is crap.
Funny thing I have found many of the pricier clothes I have bought didn't last as long as some of the more common average to budget priced clothes.
