When you whip it out, do kids run and hide, women faint and grown men cringe?

I'm talking about your knife, what were you thinking?

This is a real question though? I just ordered a Grayman Satu which is a manly man's knife if ever there was one. I was just wondering if you have flipped out your ZT's or Hinderers or your Satu or any of the really BIG knives in public say to cut up an apple or cut a wrapper or whatever? did you feel as if everyone around you just stops what they are doing and checks you out to see if you are on the Americas Most Wanted list, or at least a clear and present danger to the world at large? Have you ever even been confronted and told not to display your knife or perhaps someone like the police or another authority figure has challenged you legally for carrying in public. Do you have any interesting stories of incidents displaying your large knife in public?

I've used the Spyderco Military in university classes to remove that annoying coffee cup lid that wouldn't stay folded back.
I was surrounded by girls (literally), and no one cared.
I opened with two hands, used it, and put it away.
If you don't act like it's a big deal, neither will others, for the most part.:)

Back in the day I was moving from Tulsa,Ok to Toledo,Oh. I drove a tricked out Impala straight outta the ghetto that burned oil. I got pulled over just west of St. Louis for speeding. The officer was about to let me go until he spotted my 4-inch bali song on the front seat. I explained that it was out because i was using it to punch holes in the oil cans so i could keep my car running. He called a drug unit to come rip my car apart and send a dog thru it, they even let the air out of my spare tire. They left me with everything I owned in the world on the side of the highway, BUT I got to keep my knife!

I've been surprised, actually... I lent my 4 inch Vaquero to someone to open a small package in a public plaza with people walking all around... no one seemed to notice it.

Another time I saw a kid walking through a busy tourist attraction whittling a stick with what looked like a Buck 112 or similar, I saw an old gramps and grandma smiling down at him. The Japanese tourists didn't seem to notice or care.

Another time I found myself in the middle of a road with a machete, no one cared either.

I guess it's all about location.

Last knife I used in public (it was a picnic) was my Military as well, and it grew uncomfortably quiet at the table. After a while though, the men started talking about THEIR 'pocketknives' (as folders are called in Holland) and everything was ok. But a Military is a decidely un-PC knife, even though it's completely legal to own and carry.
(Most men own some sort of SAK, oftentimes leftovers from their army days when there was still conscription. Some own Bucks 112 or its European equivalent, a Puma, but they'll usually be hesitant to come out with it.)

i love carrying HUGE folders. most of the time nobody says anything about it, but once in a while i get someone who freaks out because "thats a weapon". i just ignore those people

I really don't care what people think and use my knife when needed as needed. If someone makes a stupid comment I give a stupid response and hope they will eventually stop being ignorant.

I've heard the comments and tried to respond/defend myself in the past but it hardly works with someone that has not idea what they are talking about or the laws.

Got an "Oh my god! He's got a knife!", using my BM Mini-Grip.

It was in Bath & Body Works. Black blade, black handle, and it carries low-profile so she didn't see it until I popped it one handed. I could have slowed my draw, and that would probably have defused the situation.

I was at the bowling alley with my Wife a couple of nights ago, the day I got my ZT 303, and I was taking off my knives and putting them in my Wifes purse so I didnt clip them with the bowling ball. I pulled out the Griptilian 550HG and the ZT 303 at the same time and I heard a "whoa.. is that a Gibbs knife?!" and the cowboy looking guy walks up to me and asks to see the blade. I flipped it out and the Grip and he had a big smile and told his wife/girlfriend/mistress that 'the striped' knife is off the show they always watch. He went on to say he only carried a small traditional folder, which was very nice, 'and this' and he pulled out a very nice BIG bone handled bowie knife. Some people looked and smiled and others didnt notice, but I live in Arizona... having older guys dressed like cowboys walking around with a six-gun on an old style leather gun belt and the younger guys walking around with pistols on tactical belts is the norm. The only thing you have to worry about here are the non knife people asking to check out your knife and then trying to flip/play with it to impress whoever they're with.

I've freaked out friends, who know me as the knife guy, by handing them a knife, which they just asked to borrow, because it's too big...? It was only a 3-inch fixed blade, and I handed it over still in the sheath...

I fear that I might run into those types of situations more, since I just bought my first ZT and a black Leek. People in WA don't strike me as the type to appreciate assisted openers. :\

yes nothing like having your knife wrist flicked repeatedly in a hammering motion by a stranger. Part of the reason I don't volunteer my knives anymore.

I mostly get modest reactions in my part of the world. Most people around my neck of the woods still participate in the age old tradition of carrying a knife for the sake of utility. Here however, some modern knives that appear more contemporary in appearance and function can occasionally get the stink eye. Yellow Delrin Case's and the like are the bee's knee's for most folks. With that being said I'm beginning to see more Kershaws and Spydercos over time.

I live I Massachusetts, land of the nanny state, and seriously nobody seems to really care when I use a knife, I carry everything from a bug to a BM 710 and nobody has ever said a word, most of the time they're glad I had a knife is they don't have to try to cut a zip tie with their keys.

Why yes they d- Oh you meant my EDC! I'm sorry! :p

I don't usually get any sort of odd reaction when I pull out a knife. I guess they either don't mind, or do mind but are too polite/sensible/nervous to comment on it.

Oh my God, that's big!...what do you need that for?-----orange Spyderco Delica. I was in the food court at the local mall a few years back and noticed the 3 security guys looking me over with their radios out. Seems the exposed pocket clip of my BM556 caused someone an anxiety attack. I just slipped it into my pocket and walked out, and I am very hesitant to produce any of my blades in public anymore unless it's a SAK.
