When you whip it out, do kids run and hide, women faint and grown men cringe?

No stories. I don't whip out my knife. I pull it from my pocket, open it, cut, and put it back in my pocket. Most people have no idea, others don't seem to mind in the slightest.

Exactly.
Whipping out a Delica can freak people out.
Using a Military or SmF is generally okay, at least in the places I've been. Your experience may differ greatly depending on location, age, and dress.

My wife is always freaking out when i whip it out in public.

Once, while we were having dinner at a steak house with her parents, i whipped it out and put it on the table. Everyone at the table just stared at it for a minute. Her dad seemed a bit shocked, but i think he was just jealous cause mine's bigger than his.

Again with the Freudian slip.

People can be a real pain overreacting to knives (even small slipjoints at times). Knife people can "whip it out and flick it open" too dramatically and not help our cause. 'Nuff said.

I've lived in a rural, knife-tolerant, Southern US town my entire life.
I'm confused by the amount of people who disregard discretion and courtesy because they "have the right".
Remember, the way you act with a knife has an impact on all of us knife users, and the knife laws we must follow.

I've rarely ever needed to use my knife in public.
Sure, I could, but is it really warranted?

Be courteous of the public's perception of a knife.
A knife will always be a sharp and dangerous tool that should be used (and deployed) with caution.
If you are purposely attempting to be flashy, scare "sheeple", or make a scene you need to turn your knife in, because the knife-community doesn't want you.

That being said, no, I've never had any trouble when carrying a knife.

I have gotten plenty of appreciation for loaning my knife though. :D

Well said.

Big or small, it's how you use it.

If you wave it around, you'll get attention, but not the kind you want.

If you're discrete and tastefully reveal it at the proper time, I think you'll be surprised how receptive they can be.

;)

Very good advice. There is a very distinct difference in the reaction of people nearby when I am in a restaurant and open my "gentlemans" Shun folder compared to "deploying" my Zero Tolerance 0300. Some of my knives have a distinct snap when opened and even opening two handed will draw some attention. But I am pretty conservative looking and live in a smallish town in Wa. State so I don't think anyone really gets too upset when they see me with a ZT or whatever.
