When your knife is a toy, not a tool?

So I view all knives as tools, but pretty much every knife on the market is a fair bit toy too. There is nothing you can't do with a $10-30 knife that you can only do with a $200 knife. If you are spending that much, you have to admit that the knife is partly toy factor.

That said, there is nothing wrong with a knife that's also part toy. If it's sharp and cuts, it fulfills all the tool factor it needs to fill, and you can tell pretty easily that a $100 or more knife is just flat out nicer than a $20 knife.
Not sure, I agree with that statement.

Further more, Ill take a nice Mora over a Medford, Heeter etc

That's an interesting topic....
I use most of the knives I buy, I do have a handful of traditionals that I have that just sit in a display case, they are mostly cheap antiques, as well as some that were my grandpas. I enjoy them because I like to imagine what the previously owner put it through. Im especially fond of trade knives like electricians knives because I can find them for under $10 pretty often in very usable shape, and they look good on the wall.
All my other knives I would consider tools minus two; my zt 0804cf and my wilson combat elc. I like these two because they look cool, have cool designs, materials, and amazing quality, but are a little pricey to use. (both were also gifts) They get carried when I go out to eat or shopping where Im not going to be cutting anything too abrasive or banging them around.
The rest of my knives all get used for whatever task I need at the time, depending on the capabilities of the knife. These are my ffg delica 4, griptilian, manix 2 ffg, ontario rat 1, case trapper, case texas jack, spyderco dragonfly, and zt 0220. I will cut without prejudice with these knives, they are all easily replaceable if damaged or broken.
I few all of these as tools for sure, and appreciate them more because of their function over how they look. Each one serves its own purpose depending on what I am doing that day and what mood I am in. For example, if I am outside working in my shop, I will be using my rat 1 or my manix because they are very stout and I cant seem to hurt them, and Im not afraid to get metal and micarta dust all inside the pivot. The delica and griptilian are good for when I want something super slicy, and probaby wont be beating on them. I generally almost always have one of the case knives on the seatbelt of my wheelchair, just because they offer much smaller slimmer blades that I may need, and I just enjoy traditional knives. (kind of getting to toy factor) I like the 0220 as a heavy duty knife that still has a little "bling" to it. I will bring it to the gun range where I might see other knife guys so I can show it off, but I still might have to beat on it a little, it often gets brought out to the shop and put to serious work too. And the dragonfly just sits as a desk knife usually because its bright orange and easy to find in the clutter.
Look at it this way, you don't just want one or two screw drivers do ya? Or just a single type of saw? You can NEVER have enough tools, and knives are all tools, some just do certain tasks better, or just look better doing it.
TL;DR: I make up excuses as to why I have over 40 knives, 10 or so of which I actually carry. ;)

Only an S110V blade is good enough for my Prime packages. Regular mail gets an S30V blade; though bills are demoted to a VG-10 treatment; but the contempt of Aus8 or 14C28N is reserved only for those friggin' coupon packs that never have any coupons I want.

We must be related!!
I carry an Advocate for work.....that bitch is just perfect for me.......but I also carry a beater for the nasty stuff!

It's like cars.
Yes a Ferrari is a mode of transportation. It'll get you from one place to another.
But it's just a vehicle.
It's a Ferrari.
And that's kind of the point too.

Are we really talking about the "Guns and Butter" principle?

Some things you buy, like cars, food, butter; have only the value to the initial buyer and consumer. Things in the Butter category lose their value instantly or very quickly with use.

Other things you buy, like guns and knives, will always have the intrinsic value of usability for their intended purpose.

I feel slightly better collecting knives as, even though I don't get all of my knives out and use them for their intended purpose, I could if I needed to do so.

Therefore, while they are not toys in and of themselves, they are basically toys to me for my use, but toys that will retain some level of value for their ability to actually be used if necessary.

And I like to play with them.
