When's the last time you gave a knife as a gift?

I went to Galyan's today to pick up a Spyderco Dragonfly for my friend Bernie. He currently has a Kershaw Chive and one of those Gerber K.I.S.S. lookalike things, and he's the only person at school who shares my knife appreciation, and his surprise birthday party is tomorrow night, so I figured I'd show him some excellent quality and get him a Spyderco. It's been at least six months since I last bought a knife, and let me tell you, it was so exciting! I felt like I was buying it for myself! I don't think I've ever had that much fun buying a gift for someone before. What about you guys?

I have a fancy Delta-Z Osprey folder ready to give to my friend and former coworker. He is not a real knife nut but he has had admired my Red Maple Burl handled Osprey on several occasions. My friend has been really helpful to me over the past few very tough months as my wife and I have been out of the country for weeks at a time. He has been looking after the mail, my multitude of packages, and our plants. I don't generally give knives as gifts. In this case I know it will be appreciated.

You mean for another person right? :D

OK, Cocobolo handle DeltaZ liner lock for my buddy's 50th birthday, about 6 months ago.

Every once and awhile if I have a knife in my Trade stock that doesn't move fast, I will give that away here, other than that, I also gave my wife a Rainbow Leek not too long ago.

I gave my CRKT point gaurd, my favourite knife at the time, to my uncle. I had other knives on me but that one was the only one suitable for a non knife person.

I usually give my dad one or two a year. On his birthday a couple of months ago he got a Rainey Vallotton Sidewinder II. Last year on Fathers day I gave him his favorite, a small d/a Apogee that Darrel made.

A Kershaw Leek just arrived in the mail today. A birthday present for my son. I give knives all the time.

One of my friends usually gets a knife for her birthday and Christmas from me every year.

Back in December I also gave the secretary at my graduate program a Buck 110 as a retirement gift to replace the knockoff that she had on her desk.

isn't there some kind of a custom never to give a knife/blade?
- as it's supposed to signify "cutting of ties"?

So when one does want to "give" a knife as a gift,
to ask the recipient for a penny -
so that they are actually "buying" the knife?

Anyone else heard of this?

I just gave a friend of mine a Leatherman Wave/maglite combo about 2 weeks ago. He expressed interest in getting a decent multi-tool, and with how much he's helped me out over the last year, it was the least I could do.

I gave my father-in-law a Spyderco Dyad a couple of months ago. He really goes for classic slipjoints, but he saw the Dyad and really liked it so I'm glad that I was able to pick one up for him. :D

I not only have heard of this custom, but I follow it. In fact, everytime I "give" something sharp I get a penny in return. This past Christmas I gave a handul of knives and utility shears as gifts and got "paid" for every one of them. Buck sold a Centennial Collector's Set this past year comprising of a etched 501, a "gift" coin, and a card with the "Legend of Knife Giving." According the the legend - "When a knife is given a coin is given in return."

Gave my mom a little desk/utility knife I made for christmas. 2" drop point, O1, 4" handle with cocobolo scales shaped to fit in your palm.

Guy I work for got a folder (linerlock) I made for christmas, 3" drop point (O1) vine filework on spine. Aluminum bolsters front and back with cocobolo scales. 410 stainless steel liners.

Tommorrow my cousin who's name I have in the family gift exchange is getting a hunter I made, for his birthday. 3.5" blade 7.5" overall, O1, brass bolsters(front only)dovetailed to cocobolo scales.

Giving knives away is a lot of fun. (I think I'm gonna cry when my cousin shows me how he touched up the edge on a bench grinder though  )People get a real kick out of getting something useful that seems like you put some though into it, especially when you made it yourself. I think I'm done for a while now though. I've got a muzzle loader to finish building ( and its mine.... ALL mine :D ) And then I'll just go back to making whatever I feel like, and either giving away or selling whatever I don't want to keep.

For X-Mas I gave my parents brother and sisters each a SpyderCard and to celebrate my wifes pregnancy we had each of them engraved with aunt uncle etc etc... The SpyderCards came out real nice with an engraving.

I started buying my sons a knife for Christmas when they were young.now they expect one every Christmas though they're age 30 and 26.they have accumilated a pretty good collection.

Just gave my son a ne owner LNIB first year issue Gerber Paul. What surprised me is that he remembered when I bought it.

I first heard of this from my grandmother on my father's side, so predictably my dad has heard of it too. I've only ever given knives as gifts to family members, and I'll admit I've never asked for the penny in return. Hasn't hurt so far, but for me at least family ties are different than friendship. It's a kind of neat idea though, although I don't know how relevant it is to knife people like us. Giving me a knife is the best way of getting on my good side that I can think of ;) .

As to the original subject, I last gave a sharp gift to my dad for Father's day two years ago. He had always carried a small lockback folder he had found at work. He just seems to have a talent for finding things; he's found several knives and other little items that I can remember, and he told me once that he found about $200 at a phone booth before I was born! Anyway, he managed to lose that little lockback he had always carried, and since he had always told me how useful it was whenever I sharpened it for him, I got a little Case lockback with a 1.5 inch blade and a metal handle for him for Father's Day. He really likes it, and he hasn't lost this one either. I also gave him a Gerber lockback with a pocket clip for his birthday a few years ago, and a Schrade Sharpfinger for Christmas. He's not really into knives the way I am, but he appreciates a good blade and always wants to see any new ones I get. At this rate though, he might end up with a good sized collection just on what I've given him!

It was at Christmas and it was to my brother-in-law. I gave him a Tanto REKAT Pioneer II.
