Where can I get a decent leather strop with some compound for a reasonable price ??

I'm in the UK so I think the net will be the best source - anyone got any suggestions ??

Hi Brendan,
If it were me I'd make my own. I took a piece of leather strap and glued it smooth side up to a block of wood that's a little larger than the leather strap. It seems to be working fine :).

P.S. You might try a wood working hobby shop in your area if you really want a store bought strop. Lots of times they carry strops because carvers use them to touch up their knives as they work.

I'll try that - what about compound !!

Is there an alternative to chromium oxide ??

I've been using some stuff I got at a local cutlery shop. But I've heard that others use stuff like "Tripoli" or polishing compounds. I'm not real familiar with this stuff yet. I'm an old "stone and water" guy myself :) .

Brendan,

If you decide to buy one, Lee Valley has several nice ones, including a set that has a double-sided strop with their green polishing compound.

It's at www.leevalley.com . Their search engine seems to be down at the moment, but when I bought it, I searched on 'strop' under 'woodworking'.

Does Lee Valley ship to the UK?

If not, with your permission, I'll buy one, and ship it over. I get stuff from them all the time. (got my strop there too ;) ) Plus, I need an excuse to get another order...:D

I do a little wood carving and was looking for a strop like the barbers use to use. I found them a barber supplies but they wanted anywhere from $85 to over a $100. SO for giggles I checked the locale antique shop and found one with 3 straps for $15:) Now I have 3 diffrent grits on three diffrent strops.

Silversmithing is a big deal among the Navajo, and there's several jewelry-making supply stores in town. I have my choice of about 8 different polishing compounds - green chromium oxide, Tripoli, White Lightning, etc. etc. etc. about $5-$8 for a one pound brick.

If anyone's having trouble locating stropping compound, I'd be glad to send you some.

Hi Brendan:

I contacted the Sarky shop and Terry Sisco made one for me on the style that Yvsa recomends. Contact Terry on t_sarki@yahoo.com
I've been using it for the past months with the green stuff and works perfectly.

Brendan you can get by with Jeweler's Rouge for most purposes, but I wouldn't mess with the tried and true, no sense in reinventing the wheel.;)

The C/O just puts the ultimate edge on a knife!:D
