why would the quality be different?

there are many respected sellers with swamprats who post accurate descriptions of their knives.

Knives or anything that is previously owned has the potential to be used, thats my only quam with buying a used blade. But then again, I guess they could be New In Box!!! (inserts foot in mouth)

you should be able to find what you are looking for on the exchange, unused and users alike.

"new in box" isnt a term often used to describe busse/swamprat/scrapyard knives. they dont come in a box, just a cardboard sleeve.

there is a good chance you would find flaws on almost any rat, even one direct from the shop. much of the process is done by hand, so there is an automatic human element built in. fit/finish is very good on all their products, but sometimes it is possible for a lemon to slip through.

what sets them apart is the warranty, imo. almost all work, sharpening, rescaling, even a nice bead blast, is normally done at no expense except shipping to the shop.

Even if they aren't absolutely NiB, they are extremely durable knives that will be no worse for a little wear. Even a fairly well-used Rat will be a good buy. The guarantee follows the knife anyway.

I now buy most of my knives second-hand, some definitely used, off our Exchange forums. With folders, they may show some wear, but I have the advantage of knowing the knife isn't a lemon -- it's been tested by the previous owner for defects. :)

I have bought absolute beaten and malformed Rats...hell, some with rust. Wipe it off and sharpen the edge and BAM! Back to using condition. I have NEVER encountered an issue with 2nd hand blades, just ask questions.
