I was looking at getting a makers mark and after looking at etching I think that going with hot stamp might be the better choice. does anyone know where I can find a simple hot stamp? do they have to be custom made my a machinist?
Thanks.

A quick internet search will yield plenty of results. You do not need to be a machinist. If you have a simple design you can carve/file it out of some annealed tool steel then heat treat it so it's hard enough to stamp with. You can hot stamp if you want but you do not need to heat the piece to be stamped. It should be in an unhardened state though. Stamping hardened steel is not going to be productive. If you are going to pay to have a company make you a professional stamp take the time to work out a nice design. If you are not confident enough to do it yourself most stamp companies should have an art department that will help put something together for you.

Look at Riverside Machine. They also sell a fixture for using the stamp. when I checked the prices were very reasonable.

I got my stamp at riverside. I've been happy with it. Although I don't hot stamp. I just use a press and stamp before heat treat.

I google Riverside Machine and I get quite a bit of companies could someone put a link up to the right one? Interested in getting a makers mark. To stamp it in pre-ht can I use a 20ton hydraulic press gently?

Nevermind I found them I think http://w.ivenue.com/riversidemachine/

I got my stamp from Buckeye (last link I listed). Their price was much better than others I contacted and the stamp is very nice. They will help you with the design if you ask and are pleasant to deal with. You can use a hydraulic press, an arbor press or a hammer if you wish.
