Where can I find a *smooth* steel?

I was just reading a post about sharpening in the Spyderco forum and a problem I have had is that I can't find a SMOOTH steel anywhere at any price.

Everything I find either has the ridges running the length of the rod, or is diamond-impregnated.

Any suggestions?

I looked at the one that Razor Edge sells, and it looks OK other than being "non-traditional.

Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?

I've got one of the Razor-Edge steels and I think it works really well. I learned to sharpen knives on a Spyderco sharpener (my father bought one of the first ones in the late '70s) so the Razor-Edge steel seemed natural to me.

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

I use the Razor Edge steel also. I have the folding steel, but I believe they sell a regular straight steel which I'm thinking about getting also.

Bernard Levine told me that F. Dick makes "the best" smooth steels, but I've not been able to locate any.

try Chicago Cutlery steels. these are available at most decent department stores, and are not too expensive. these have a little texture, but are pretty slick.

If you are looking for F. Dick Smooth Steels, got to www.knifemerchant.com. He carries the complete line. Very expensive though.

Ya, prices seem a tad high. The Razor Edge steel works great for me, I'll probably stick with it, given the prices of the F. Dick steels.

I like the Rozor's Edge steel too. It resets the edge on even my AFCK! Also, if you have a Spyderco Sharpmaker and you get the Razor's Edge steel with the two rods that swing down, the rods are actually removable and you can put them in the groove cut in the triangle stones and steel that way!! I read that one from Sal on the forums. Neat trick!
