Where can I find less expensive damascus.

Does anyone have some sources for damascus that's on the low end of the cost scale? I want to get enough for some a couple swords and daggers.

Appreciate it as always.

This is not going to be what you want to hear, but if your seeking "cheap" damascus, thats exactly what you'll wind up getting. Stuff that has cold shuts, voids, cracks, and/or it will be made of materials that will not harden...meaning that you'll end up with blades that will be nothing more than "wall hangers" that will very likely have visible defects.

I suppose it all depends on what you classify as "cheap"......for several years there has been damascus coming out of overseas locations that is "cheap" when compared to domestic sources. After receiving many emails and phone calls from folks asking me to assist them due to problems with this steel, I investigated, and found that much of it is made from whatever those outfits could scrounge up....mostly old vehicle parts, so there is just no way short of a spectrograph to know what steels are contained in it. It boils down to if the product is made of unknown "junkl", then its a safe bet that whatever you produce from it will in turn be the same. Honestly, there isn't a reputable damascus maker that I know of who would not cringe at the words "cheap" and "damascus" in the same sentence.

Yeah I hear ya, that's why I was careful to phrase my words without using 'cheap'. I know I'll have to front a bit of coin it's just that I'm unfamiliar with sources still and don't know where to find a good value bang for the buck damascus. I've been searching around but it's a big sea of metals out there. Just thought I'd see if someone could toss me a life line or point me in the right direction.

I think Alabama Damascus is as reasonable as anyone and more reasonable than most.

You might want to get in touch w/ Deker here on the forums. He's offering larger pieces at reasonable prices.

Delbert Ealy's Damascus is probably not cheap, what it is is beautiful, consistant, and made of known steels. He's on the forum too so he's one of us (and a darn nice guy and honest to deal with)
If you want inexpensive damascus forge your own out of known steel, if you want something phenominal that gives you excellent value for the money spent get out your wallet and talk to Del. Devin Thomas is also talked about as a damascus supplier, If I was going to buy damascus instead of forging up my own, I'd buy from Del.

I agree, Brad Vice is a good guy and has some reasonable prices.

You can learn more by checking his website.

I think he also sells on flea-bay.

Somebody mention my name? :)

I'm glad that somebody believes I have reasonable prices (other than me :D). Drop me a PM or an email and we can talk about what your needs are. I'm not a full time maker so my schedule moves a bit slower, but I'll make you good steel at a reasonable price.

I like Alabama Damascus. Talked to him yesterday. I needed billet for some folders. He is very fast shipper. Steel is excellent quality and very reasonable. Plus He is hoot to talk to.

there is a young couple who live in Ephrata Washington who do very good work and can make about what ever you want as far as pattern goes. they are using good steel from kelly Cupples. I don't have a number for them but I will find one for you. here is a few photos of their work. their names are Matt and Michelle, Whitmus.

Some of theirs claims to be 1095/mild, some 1095/15n20. Even a bar of 1095/mild would average out to .5 carbon and harden to what, 55-57?

It's entirely based on proportions. If you have a straight 50/50 mixture that's true, but if it's 66/33 mild/1095 you end up with a different beast all together. Just a little note to remind folks that what steels plays just as important a role as how much of each is used.
