Where can I get a leather rope for the lanyard hole?

Can't bear with those nylon ropes...
Where do you guys find those leather ropes?
 
I got a nice dark brown piece of leather rope/lacing from a local shoe repair shop/cobbler. Worked great.

I got a big spool of leather lace (finished on all sides) at Walmart in their craft section. It was $3.
 
How do you tie/braid a lanyard? I have one on a knife that I got as a gift but I'm afraid to "reverse engineer" it in case I can't re-tie it. Thought my girlfriend (who can tie a knot in a cherry stem with her tongue) could do it but no luck. Probably should have paid attention at Scout camp.
