Where can I get "good" W1 tool steel from?

Hey, I am curious where I can get good quality, and consistent (makeup wise) W1 tool steel from. I know alot of places online sell it like speedymetals and other places that sell all kinds of metals in diff shapes n sizes and tool steels, but I have read some of the specs on some of those sites and the ranges in carbon content and other elements/alloys seem to differ quite a bit from site to site. I want to know where I can get W1, that is the same as a good W2 would be, but without the tungsten and vanadium that makes them differ from eachother. It doesn't matter if it isnt flat stock as I want to mainly forge with this steel, so round or w/e would be great. Also if anyone has any experience with the steel from the place they know that sells it, could you tell me how it turned out (if it's nice and shallow hardening and gets nice and hard)? Thanks :)

But a couple weeks ago he was dealing with an issue .In W1 OR 2
Very good guy ,really cares and is the best.

Butch, I'd be interested in that maybe too. I got some W1 drops from Deker a few years ago that worked out nice, but the guy started wanting almost double for those drops last I asked... so no dice.

I woul be interested too Butch :D

I called nj steel baron a month ago when I was calling about getting steel to replace my bad W2 and all they had was some 3/8 round (too small) , which had something different about it, like the way it was rolled from the mill maybe? I forget what the lady said but anyway I am interested in anybody selling some.

McMastar-Carrs' W1 looks like it has a standard spec sheet of what good W1 would be made of, anybody try that? and are those prices fair?
Thanks guys :)

You can give a try here, this is a response I received to an email about W2 availability. They may also have W1. I'm going to contact him about some of the 1 inch stuff.

In addition to this stock we do have a number of shorter “drops” from 1” thick up to 4” thick in sections like 1” x 3” x 4” or 2” x 4” x 6”, for example.

We have approx 2,000# or more of these “drops” on the floor.

Depending on the quantity you need, the price for this material would be $1.00 per lb to $2.00 per lb.

Prices are FOB Macedonia , Ohio 44056.

We have a $40.00 minimum order. A $5.00 lot Fuel/Energy Surcharge is in effect for all shipments at this time.

Add $10.00 lot for packaging for any UPS shipments.

Thanks for contacting us & please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Stan
