Anybody know of s good internet store that sells already prepared insects of various sorts? The wife's younger sister has gotten all into the Bizarre Foods tv show and I think it would be fun to get her a bunch of edible bugs for Xmas.

another place might be your local zoo. They stock a bunch of bugs to feed to animals.

I remember finding a site awhile back with a bunch of really weird and unique edibles... I'm not sure if this is the one but it looks an awful lot like it. Anyway, worth a look, even if you're not interested in eating bugs.... some really interesting things there:

Alright. I ordered 2 of all the various flavors of larvets and crickets from Hotlix. One for her, one for me. We'll try them together. I think she'll chicken out if there isn't someone else doing it with her. That stuff actually looks pretty tasty. Reminds me of some survival courses I took as a teenager. They had us eating a lot of bugs. Raw they were usually pretty nasty, but you roast 'em and they taste great.

You could try Korean stores. They eat grasshoppers and I know they have them canned. I have actually tried commercially canned Korean grasshoppers. (never dare a Korean) First impression, go over to the window sill and find a dead bug, eat it, it's about what you would expect, kind of crunch and bland. Mac

No joke, once you get past the mental block of "ugh, it's a little insect", they were good! Now that I think about it, I think we also had some of those BBQ mealworms too.

Have fun!

I'll stick with the shrimp and pretend I've hit my chiton quota....

You can eat crabs. Check in your underpants.

You'd be best to cook them anyway, as they can contain harmful parasites, at least as I understand it.

Doc Canada is 100% correct. Bugs contain parasites and the television shows you watch have people eating "sterile kitchen" insects, not those found in naturally outdoors. These are raised on particular diets and are cleaner if you will than your run of the mill insects. As for foreign markets, remember, not every country has strict food processing regulations as the U.S. and other developed nations. You might be taking a gamble with those purchases.

I never recommend eating bugs when plants can be learned and they don't crawl away. Also, bugs are a last resort food in my opinion since they can be unpalatable and need to be cooked.

Bottom line, be careful what you eat.

other sources of insects and other invertabrates would include:

* Bait store (fishing)

* Pet Store. many times you can get feeder crickets and other insects

* i can give you a list of apartments that i work at if you like roaches or want to try eating imported bed bugs.

----- good luck ---- Eric

Heck, just buy a bunch of crickets at the bait store and chocolate coat them. :D

Speaking of being careful of what I eat...

My doctor has said to me before "Dylan, you're more ballsy than your doctor is skillful."

My favorite bug food is to find a nest of big carpenter ants, bust it open and gather the pupae, then roast them or saute with a bit of butter and garlic.

Grasshoppers in butter and garlic are also good, but remove wings and legs before cooking.

I find nothing more exciting (read as stomach turning) as watching a 10 to 14 inch horse hair worm twist and turn as it emerges from a live 2 inch cricket. That sight alone took crickets off my dinner menu for a long time.
