I'd like to get myself a post anvil, and did get some 4" round mild steel at the scrapyard once. But, that was a pretty rare and lucky occurrence it seems. I will be driving from AZ to LA, and could take a little time on the trip to look around.
I could also work with plate, have a couple contacts that could cut out an anvil if I could find something thicker than 1 1/2". I know of places to get quality anvils, but of course, I'm looking for something cheap and I have no problem with the DIY route.

Mainly, can someone give me a line on what to look for off I-10?

you should come up to Utah, there is a place here that has plate 10" and up in thickness. thy also have large square stock. and if you buy 100 pounds or more its like .30 a pound or something.

Hmm, a little out of the way, but maybe. Could you shoot me an email with info

if you're around lafayette, la. there is about 50 machine shops that have scraps and drops. most of it will be 4140 round. grab a phonebook and call around. you may be able to find a 6" round about a foot long. that would make a good 100lb anvil

Lafayette proper, or you mean New Iberia, Broussard, etc? 50 is a lot to call, lol. :) I really didn't know what machine shops to call, at least around Terrebonne. The ones I did check with didn't work this size material, and the couple steel suppliers I dealt with with my dad (like Dolphin) and while working offshore didn't stock tool steels in the size either.

Here's just a thought. Locate a company near you that installs automotive lifts. Alot of auto dealers are getting rid of the below ground lifts and installing above ground lifts. Mainly because of EPA regs and hassles with the underground oil tanks and lines. the arms on the below ground lifts are about 3 feet long and 6" and 2.5" thick.
My 300 lbs'er is made from 3 of these stacked and welded together. Not a Hay Budden but it works. Besides they may give them to you are sell them to you at scrap price.

more like broussard, lafayette. shops like Blue line, moores machine, hick's machine, coastal machine and supply, arsement machine and supply, stable drill. they usually have bigger sized drops or scraps and are within about 15 miles of I-10. just about everything we cut around here is 4140, energy alloys in lafayette has it in just about any size round you might need, they probably have some cheap drops.
