Where did this come from? Hippo tooth

Just for grins, I went into the shop and tried "scratching" on a hippo tooth ala scrimshaw. The enamel on hippo tooth is some of the hardest known. It pretty much laughed at my attempts.

Yeah, we were pretty evenly matched. Smelled about the same, too. Hadn't wrassled a hippo since before I met Nanc, either. ;)
So what's it to ya, ya toothless, baldheaded old f'k? :D

When looking at scrimshaw always look at the overall color/Petina of the whole piece. The only way for the overall petina to be changed over the whole area would be that it was handled a lot as in Piano keys, oils from the skin causes a different ageing process on the Ivory.
Just a point of interest.
