Where Do I Go From Here?

Take the true litmus test. Go to blade show, If you do not crave any blades after that you know you found "The One" and then can move on to some other worthwhile hobby that nobody understands and cant figure out why you are so obsessed with it. 2017 was my third iteration of the "Perfect EDC Hunt" could only narrow the field to three that I truly love to carry. Now the collection stands at 290+ knives and I could almost carry a different one everyday for a year but yet only three made the cut and are in Rotation. I still keep one eye out for something that will be the One. Congrats on finding yours.

BK14,
I am not a rotation guy. In fact, I only have users. I have a knife for the roles I need them:

2-EDC (Tops MSK in civilians, Bradford Guardian 3 in uniform)
1-hunting/camp knife (Fallkniven HK9)
1-field knife (Bark River Bravo 1)
1-bug out bag knife (Fallkniven F1)

Now this came about with me selling my extra knives and upgrading to the ones I wanted for specific roles. I find that using my knives helps cure any type of want for a new blade. If I am not getting out to the woods enough or using my blades enough, I can find myself feeling the 'want' rising for a different blade. I usually plan a day in the woods when that happens and rekindle my love with the blades I have. Works for me.

Side note, I didn't sell all my knives. My son gets what he wants first before anything hits the classifieds. He has a Fallkniven F1 Pro and BK16 because he wanted them. The Fallkniven F1 Pro I loved, but dammit he loved it just way more than me. Every single day it was "can I use the Eagles Knife (he calls it that because I rehandled it with green jute epoxied twine giving it a Philadelphia Eagles color scheme and we are ravenous Eagles fan household)"? I mean I couldn't say no, so finally I said hey buddy you can have it, which prompted the Bark River Bravo 1 coming into my possession.

Oh now that’s a dangerous idea!

Thanks for all the insight y’all. I think I’ll hold off on Blade this year, and wait until I have a little more in mind when it comes to purchasing. I’ll enjoy the Small 21 for EDC for now, and keep searching out knives that fulfill other purposes in the mean time

Just because you're satisfied with a few knives doesn't mean you don't love knives. Sounds to me, you've got your priorities in order. Getting burned out at any age is when the fun stops. Use what you have, head in the direction you want to go for your education and before you know it you'll be hungry for something new.
Btw, attending Blade is not just about buying knives. There's so much to see and do, great folks to meet and talk with, events that are fun, opportunity to learn. If you can, make the event.

I'll save you all the aggravation, it'll never happen, eventually there will be something else, another must have knife, one that finally checks all the boxes, really tickles your fancy, your EDC Grail, (can there be such a thing? I think not) I've been collectin', accumulatin' and usin' knives of all Kings for nearly 50 years now. Half a century of discoverin', learnin' about and enjoyin' everything about knives, includin' most of the people involved in the industry and community.

I can assure you that you can never stop lookin' for the one so where do you go from here? You share and discuss what you've learned with others, you find other things, nuances you never knew or understood about a pattern or a particular Stella or alloy. Even if you found the one(s) you'll ever need there's always room to learn more and share and discuss that with others.

Just look at how far the industry has come in terms of materials and production methods not to mention the skill and art of the knife and how we adorn them in the last 25 or so years.

You haven't even begun to test the custom waters. If you can afford a Sebenza you can start checkin' out custom/handmade fixed blades and basic slipjoints. There is a lot of talent yet to reach it's peak around here and some that is at it's zenith.

Then there's the historical knives, patterns that have proven themselves throughout time, Buck, Schrade, Queen.

You ask where to from here? The answer is anywhere you want because if after a half a century of knives I still haven't found the one or ones. I come close but in the end I believe you're like most enthusiasts/users and as long as the science of metallurgy keeps advancing and you're still usin' and lookin' for the best, you're not done so back to work. ;)

I carry a Plain Jane Sebenza 25 right now along with a Love Wolf/Loveless City Knife paired with a 2015 CSC Serpentine Shadow Jack with Birdseye pivots and bocote scales in a leather pocket sheath along with the JD Ellis Lanny's Clip in the opposing LF pocket with the AO ZT 0770CF.

As long as you're alive you'll keep learnin' and lookin'. Like I said somewhere earlier once before, you never stop learnin'.

So true, I've yet to make blade but I've been to a bunch of the East Coast shows, (ECCKS & NYCKS when it was still ok to bring a knife email to the NY show ;) ) The people I met and became friends with are still friends 25 years later. (I'll get out to Blade one year Gus) The community make this so much more. The people you meet at shows and factory tours along with the ones at hammer-ins and rendezvous . :) Check out the section in community called IIRCRegional and see who's in your neck of the woods. I know that there are at least 15-20 knife Knuts from BF within a 2 hour drive or less from my home and I've met many in person at various get together soon and local shows.

You are so right! I just know if I go I’ll end up buying something awesome and a really nice knife will go uncarried (either whatever new one I buy, or my current EDC, if that makes sense). I will miss meeting up with friends I’ve made in the hobby.

Great perspective, and beautiful photos. Through this site and various Facebook groups I’ve had so much fun sharing and learning with everyone, and connecting with people is the most fun part of the hobby. It’s great finding people around the world with similar interests who you can call your friends.

You are so right! Well I do have a GEC Micarta Oregon Trapper that should be here today or tomorrow, and the new Tactical Kwaiken from Emerson looks awesome...
I will be getting one of the brown jigged bone versions when they hit.

If I were you, I'd just slow things down on the knife buying versus stopping. You'll probably change.

. . . how did you refocus the hobby, after you were done searching for the next best thing? Sorry for the long post, but if you made it through, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Well first when you make a long post I will complain about it . . . not. ;)
Until then keep 'em coming.

Second . . . and how I found I deal with this situation of being very pleased with a great knife that does and is what I really want . . . as you said why leave it at home it if is above the rest . . . I just put another one that I really enjoy in the other pocket (or more than one).

When I start carrying more than two Para 2s some body bop me. ( I don't think I have carried two at the same time actually).

But yeah there are no rules carry what you enjoy; if it means just one or more than one.

Alright everyone, a bit of a deeper topic here. I’ve loved knives for a long time, and am always looking for the next best thing. Well now I think I’ve found it. My Sebenza has made me want to stop carrying every other modern folder. I carry Emerson for hard work, and GEC when I’m feeling a slipjoint, but for regular EDC, it’s just the small Insingo. I have found that I am not a rotation kind of guy. I pick a knife and carry it almost exclusively for months or years. I’m looking forward to carrying this Sebenza for the foreseeable future. It was a really meaningful gift, and I’m looking forward to making it my companion for at least the next few years. So there is the conundrum! Do I just stop buying knives now? I was thinking of going to Blade Show, but don’t really see the point if I don’t want to buy a new EDC. Has anyone else ran into this, and how did you refocus the hobby, after you were done searching for the next best thing? Sorry for the long post, but if you made it through, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Feel free to let me know which ones need a new home lol. I’m sure we can work something out! Got the cash app?? ;)

Look to some of our own talented knife makers here on the forums like Matt from CMFTW knives, he turns out some of the tightest freehand grinds anywhere and knows how to make a knife for even the most demented imagination. :)

Trust me, if I had any use whatsoever for as badass of a blade as he makes I would have already! Even so, I’ll probaku hit Matt up sooner or later regardless!

You’re right, this forum gets some novel worthy threads! (Nothing wrong with that!) I do the exact same thing. I usually carry the traditional flavor of the month along with my main modern carry.
