Where do I start with sharpening?

As we've all said, pretty much, the Sharpmaker is an amazing tool.

To the OP, just be sure to read the directions, watch the instructional DVD, and practice a couple of times with beater knives you don't care about.

It's sort of easy when you're first starting out with the Sharpmaker to blunt the tips of your knives, if you're not carefully following the directions.

I just went to OSH Hardware and bought 3 DMT sharpeners:
Green(Extra fine)
Red(Fine)
Silver (Coarse)

I just started practicing on cheap carbon steel kitchen knives
I'm no expert
But, I'm better then when I started

Thanks for the tip on the RAZOR EDGE BOOK OF SHARPENING :thumbup:
I found this link====>

Novice here, I don't understand. Isn't the Sharpmaker really sharpening a knife? I know what you mean by maintaining but if I took S30V, dull, would the Sharpmaker sharpen it?

(I only read that S30V is hard to sharpen. I really have no idea.)

Thanks.
The stones included are a fine and extra fine grit so it works ok at honing and edge but if your knife gets too dull and you have to put a primary edge back on it will take a LONG time to do so. The diamond sleeves would make it quicker but still will take a while. You are also stuck with using what Spyderco thinks your edge should be and I usually like a thinner edge.I got one tried I didn't like it much but that is just me I think I might have been too used to freehanding and had a hard time adapting and it will also round your point off if you are not careful and it makes it harder to get the point as sharp as the rest of the blade.
A lot of people like them and I would probably recommend them to someone who didn't want to take the time to learn to sharpen freehand but for me they did not work as well as freehanding or the Apex sharpner.

Yes, the sharpmaker does sharpen knives, but whta hes saying
is that it doesn't teach you how to sharpen them.
