Where do the materials come from?

"If you don't care, don't post"?

The OP asked if he was in the minority or if others were worried about sources of materials. I gave my opinion, like he asked. All the woods used are available from reputable dealers. What about the chromium used in stainless knives? Was it mined in South Africa, or India and purchased under rules of "fair trade"? Was child labor used in the mines, and better check the mine safety records. If you don't trust your knife maker on his claim that ivory is pre-ban, don't buy ivory. I hate elephant poachers as much as anyone on this forum. And when are we going to get a handle on those mastadon poachers? And what about...

as far as the wood goes, I'm not too concerned as knife scales use pretty small quantities, so it's not like they are clear cutting rare forest just for the knives. I'm a wooden boat builder so i'm familiar with industries using resources until they are dangerously depleted. I won't buy any products made with elephant ivory, pre-ban, antique or otherwise. I see no harm in using mammoth ivory for anything.

"Who cares???" is different then "I don't care". "Who cares???" is a question that belittles the posters question. Obviously he cared enough to ask the question. On this forum we ask that posters be respectful to one another. I'm sorry you're two word "who care's???" response wasn't. If you want to discuss it more, do it via PM or email, not in this thread.

The subject of this thread is really borderline for this forum. Knife discussion is what we do here. If this gets political it'll get closed. It may get closed anyway.

I don't have a problem with the OP's question but I do have a problem with the OP's tone. It's kind of condescending and reflects someone who does not approve with the use of certain materials for say knife covers. He states that his profession somewhat drives his feelings and is perhaps the basis for his question.

It's one thing to say; Hey, I wonder where they get cover material for knives than to say; Hey, I'm not quite sure if I approve of where cover material comes from for knives or how it is collected.

According to Case's website, their bone covers are sourced from Brazil...

Case knives start with carefully shaped handles made from a wide range of genuine materials like Brazilian cattle bone, stag antler, buffalo horn, mother-of-pearl, exotic woods and stones. Brass, nickel, and silver components highlight each form, bringing together knives that are not just beautiful, but able to stand the tests of time and use.

I was willing to give this a chance but it's really not an appropriate discussion for this forum. It's also a politically charged subject which doesn't belong here. I'm closing this one. I'm sorry I left it as long as I did.
