Are you surprised by the results so far?

If so, in what ways?

Do you believe these results would be representative of custom knife buyers in general as well as the BF members polled here?

Quite a different outcome in comparison to knives in general.

I would have been be very surprised indeed if "makers" didn't claim the clear top spot as the most common source for the purchase of custom knives.

Given the choices in the poll, which pretty much made sense to me to begin with, I don't see any surprises in the numbers. So far, it's about what I would have expected.

Same here, but I would not have expected the margin to be so broad.
I would have expected On-line Purveyors to have received more votes.

Wouldn't knife shows, and online purveyors sort of be the same thing? Usually its just a website for those who display at shows.

Not really as many or perhaps most on-line purveyors don't display at shows.

Knife Art, Blade Gallery, Rehoboth, Knife Legends, Nordic, ACK are ones that come to mind that don't typically set-up at shows. They do a lot of buying though.

Les, Bob Neal, Dave Ellis have tables at select shows, however I would guess their total show sales are only a fraction of their total on-line sales.

Dealers, weigh in please; am I right?

Now that the votes have leveled out, the results are about what I assumed they would be with direct from makers getting the majority, knife shows and on-line purveyors coming in close to one another followed by other collectors.
And of course eBaY is going to get a bit.

I believe the BF poll results in this case would be representative of the custom knife community at large.

I had a feeling that trading among collectors would receive
higher numbers... But I suppose that Dealers get most of
the knives collector's sell.

I also suspect that not all that many collectors know each other
well enough to sell/trade among themselves...

All the best,

i did not see it was a multiple choice poll but the numbers are not terribly suprising to me

many of the frequent posters here enjoy buying direct from the maker.

i would have thought the collector to collector numbers would have been a bit higher here as well

an interesting comparison would be for a magazine to run a similar poll and compare results

Interesting comparing the our customs poll the Blade Magazine's poll especially since they didn't include a "from maker" category.
I realize custom knives make up only small portion of collectible knives in general, however I would like to have seen how a "from maker" category would have effected their results.

I buy from the maker, but how to FIND the maker was not asked. Most of the makers I buy from I "met" here. All but one in fact. I attend all the big local gun shows (the number of knife makers there has really dropped over the last decade or so), and when a knife show returns to Reno I'll be there again.

I buy from both makers and other collectors, many of my friends here on the forum know what I like and I am notified via PM if they are about to turn something loose that I happen to collect. I have picked up some very nice pieces in this manner. After finding a maker, either here or meeting them at last Blade, I have tended to order direct. I am a sucker for peanuts and had the fortunate experience to order from several makers them. Some of them were not even making them at the time of the order, but I just asked for their first one they sold.
I love the forum and the folks, collectors and makers that make it up.

The Blade Show is without a doubt the best place to meet makers as it's the largest gathering of makers and you can speak with them, inspect and handle their work.

Another, is to study the "Knives Annuals" to find which maker's work interest you. Call them and introduce yourself.

There's even maker contact information in the back of the book. Usually, even the most well known makers are very interested in talking to a new collector.
