Where Do You Buy?

In the past I have bought knives at a "brick and mortar" for a higher price simply because I did not want to wait for shipping.

Have bought several times at BestKnives and got the stuff delivered via USPS. Great service and rather fast. It's cheaper in comparison to local prices here in Israel even incl. shipping charges.
Unfortunatey most of other US internet shops don't ship to Israel. :(

I buy a lot online, but I also patronize a good knife store about 30 miles from my house. It's important to me to be able to handle the knives, so I pay for it.

As for customs, although I have bought from places like AZCK and Bladegallery, I really want to talk to the maker directly.

I'm sorry, but when it's getting difficult to make rent and I have some jerk telling me that he can get a $30 shinai for less on the internet... it just really chaps my kaboose. The price difference wouldn't even be $6. And I have the same problem with knives. Suddenly MSRP for a Spyderco Delica is just the most outrageous thing ever.
WTF?

Msrp on a Delica is a whopping $66. That knife is commonly available for $40-ish at most online retailers, even those with physical stores too. Who'd pay $26 extra if they knew better? I don't know about you, but for me $26 is a lot of money. I've had jobs before where $26 was a half-day's pay. You think someone should work hours extra just to pay your premium prices? What are they getting from your shop that's worth $26 extra, a lap dance?

Depending on circumstances, shipping charges are often less than paying crazy-high sales taxes.

And yes, I think $66 for a plastic factory knife is way too much (I don't know if it's "the most outrageous thing ever" though). $40 seems fair, but I'm holding out for a sale.

Sorry if this post comes accross rude, but I didn't care for the tone of your last comments.

I wish there was a knife store nearby. I wouldn't mind paying extra for the luxury of handling the knife and being able to pick the one I like best. There's a few new super sportsmans places, BassPro and Gander Mountain. I've checked them both out and will buy there occasionally but they pretty much carry the basics and obviously don't specialize on knives. I've been fairly lucky with my web purchases but it would be nice to be able to handle before buying.

i have a local shop just a few miles away. the guy is fairly knowledgeable and i can handle the knives. just last week, i picked up a Buck-Strider (i.e. folding crowbar- love that quote!) and knew it would feel like carring a roll of quarters in my pocket. i got a BM insted. i paid about 15.00 more for the knife but was worth it. i've been going there for years and i like to talk to him also. also, i do'nt buy alot of knives, so the difference wasn't a big deal.

I don't mind stores selling for MSRP. What I mind is stores selling for 150% MSRP. That I cannot afford. I'm sorry. What's worse, they usually have little knowledge. Since many have no experience, they just make up answers to try and sell you on it.
Charging more is fine IF there is improved service and real help.

there's a place here in San Diego (the only place, in fact) that sells knives exclusively. they're in the mall downtown.

they are HORRIBLE. they generally charge OVER MSRP on pretty much everything, and they are some of the stupidest, most inconsiderate people on the planet. they love to talk down to me, and brag about the knives, but i always end up knowing TONS more than them, and since i don't know half of what most of you folks on here do, that's saying a LOT.

my lovely wife bought me a Kiwi for Christmas and i am aware that she bought it from this store. i'll keep it and cherish it, because it's from her, and because it's a beautiful knife but... over $80 for the stainless version, kiddies! OVER EIGHTY. what is that happy-crappy all about??!

i've said it before, and i'll say it again: i specifically and explicitly frequent this store only to check out knives i might want to purchase online. i fondle them, open and close them, look 'em all over, ask to see as many as i like from the case, and them i'm outta there, hittin' the web that night. the truth of the matter is, i wouldn't mind if they went out of business, since i end up buying many knives/gadgets online sight-unseen anyway.

on the other hand, i have bought many fine knives from various online stores (and eBay) with much success and satisfaction. "it's part of the new way", good or bad.

rude or not bob its the way it works. i understand shop owners need to make money and im willing to pay for good servce and the ability to feel what i would like to buy, but im only willing to pay so much. Those things maybe have lets say if i dont want to wait for a knife to arrive and im happy with what im looking at maybe at most a value of $20. Money is dear to me and i dont have much so i get what i can as cheap as possible. If a store cant offer it to me then i will aquire it online same deal if the guy across the street can offer it to me cheaper and you dont offer any reason for me to change my mind im going across the street.

Here in Tucson we are fortunate to have Bladerunner Knives. The prices are pretty much the same as on line shops. Lots of customs for me and swords and production stuff for the rest of the gang. It is a bit off a main street but the locals know where to go. The two big malls often have nice knives but all at MSRP. I stick with the well stocked intimate shop with the knowledgable knife nut. I have purchased items from NewGraham and other Forumites.

I won't buy anything from the local knife store because the owner is dishonest, rude and apparently insane judging by the prices he puts on his knives.

There is a knife/gun shop about 40 miles away where I have bought quite a few knives. The prices are reasonable and most importantly, the knife guy doesn't act like a jerk.

Otherwise, I buy most of my knives from www.knifeworks.com (Good guys)

I would love to find a local shop that has a good selection. As long as the pricing is not retail then the advantage of being able to handle the knife first is valuable. For me though the local shops (sports stores mainly) have a very limited selection and for some reason think that everyone only buys serrated edges.
