Where do you farm out your heat treat?

I was thinking about trying my hand at making a few knives. I have what I need to grind/shape blades and handles, but not to harden and temper. Where would you send very small quantities if you were going to farm it out?

Peter,s heat treat

best prices for small batch

$25 per blade and $110 for 4-20 blades

3-4wks turn around.

Delbert Ealy. $5.00 per blade. I have done about a dozen with him. No one is cheaper.
Do a google search and you will easily find him under Ealy Knives.

Edited to add: As long as it's a standard carbon steel Delbert Ealy has done a great job on the stuff I have sent him. If you are dealing with any exotic alloys or stainless types then Peters is probably the best of all. .

Peters for sure. Have done hundreds if not 1,000s with em perfect every time.

I believe there are individuals on this site that offer heat treating services. I have used Jeff Mutz at TruGrit in the past and was very happy with the service.

I have used Paul Bos for over 30 years for ATS-34 and CPM 154. They always come back perfect.

I use TruGrit for heat treating. I will use Bos if needed.

I will not send my blade to any heat treater that uses a torch to straighten a stainless blade no matter how many sing their praises.

For stainless steel I use Paul Farner at Paul Bos heat treat. There is no extra charge for cryogenic treating after heat treat and he checks Rockwell hardness 2 or 3 times on each blade. Top service and quality in my experience. Larry

Carbon steel in my shop, Peters for everything else.

I normally use Peter's for stainless, though recently I misread their price/quantity and thought it was $30 for 1-3 blades total.... It's $30 EACH! :foot:

I do believe our very own JTKnives has recently started offering heat treating services at a reasonable price as well, which may be more ideal for smaller quantities.

Here in Canada I use the services of Canadian Knifemaker Supply.
Rob and Marilyn do a great job on stainless steels with the deep cryo included as needed. The have a very fast turn around.

I have had Delbert do 1095 for me with great results. I have also used Peters as well with excellent results. Only thing with Peter's is you need to send a lot of knives at once to make it affordable. Definitely nicer to have your own oven.

Yes I do do small batches of heat treating for carbon or stainless and do liquid nitrogen cryo.
