Where do you sharpen?

Iv looked around BF and can not find a thread showing peoples sharpening areas/stations. (Might have searched the wrong words) but, I want to see where everyone sharpens their knives and what they sharpen on such as just the table or a bench or what have you.

I like to sharpen on my coffee table with a plastic sheet under my stones so that i can contain the water that likes to run everywhere. I do this so when I switch stones or get frustrated, (still trying to learn some things), i can take a quick break and watch some TV then go back with a more level head.

Let us and show us where and what you sharpen on!

I sharpen on my coffee table too! Good lighting, and it's at a good height so I can easily see everything that I'm doing.

This is what i was thinking too! hah but then i got to thinking of standing up and what not would be better?

Jason, don't you ever get tired of standing in one place sharpening all the time? By the way, your set up is great! When I finally get settled and what not, A area like this would be great.

I'm a beginner, but I sharpen standing at my loading bench. Good lighting and when I'm done everything goes in a cabinet under the bench.

I have a black and decker workmate bench. i may have to use my regular workbench to use my worksharp with a filter system I bought but it's cluttered at the moment. Either way, they're in the garage.

Standing up, with a bench at roughly belly button height seems to be the best for me. Standing gives me better results than sitting just about every time. I think it's because, while standing, I can isolate most of my arm, elbow, and wrist joints, letting me keep a more consistent angle. I try to use mostly my legs and hips to move my whole upper body, keeping everything else isolated.

I sometimes do this at a kitchen counter, or other work bench. I also have a Jaw Horse that I built a simple table top for. The Jaw Horse is SUPER stable (and heavy). With the table top clamped in it's vice jaw, it provides a pretty stable work surface. Probably much more stable than I really need for sharpening. In retrospect, it was a little silly to purchase this ~45 pound portable stand/sawhorse/vice for sharpening. But now I have it for other jobs too.

I sharpen wherever the closest sharpener is when I notice my knife is dull. (I keep a stone or diamond sharpener in a few places where I'm likely to use a knife, and often carry a pocket stone or diamond file.) If I'm cooking then in the kitchen. Other times it might be working on a honey-do project in the garage. If paying bills or getting ready in the morning it'll likely be in my home office. If out hunting or fishing I'll be touching up a knife in the field or on the water.

Unless I'm doing my once-a-year sharpening with the Edge-Pro at the kitchen table, I usually sharpen on the couch in front of the TV with a DMT Aligner. Touch-ups are done where ever they are needed.

In my underwear at the kitchen table. Knives all over the table. A youtube video playing a knife review or something close to it.

Coffee table. In a coffee shop. No weird glances or anything. I've actually had friends come up and ask to sharpen their knives. It's extra hilarious to me because I live in the most "progressive" neighbourhood of Seattle.

Basement workbench (pic) most often, kitchen counter and the bench where I work, anywhere needed.

I have a bucket stack for my waterstones, divided by set or the closest set they fit in with, the stack is bigger than what's on the bench - top one holds a bunch of rags. Waterbath with bridge the long way on the bench. My belt grinder and wet wheel are on a steel table opposite (not pictured). Pile of Washboards awaiting stain, my personal board still under testing with diamond grit compound. Lapping marks on the stone show what I mean when I say I only lap enough to reveal the high spots before using again - DMT XXC for lapping.

Set-up is a lot more civilized since I implemented the bucket stack system, used to have stones all over the place. My oil stones sit on the open shelf where my not-in-rotation waterstones used to be.

Edit to add:
Since watching all the Korin videos I've tried sharpening on a cushion on the floor with the bath up on blocks in front of me. Almost feels more stable, but for now I stand at the bench.

Where ever I am, with whatever is available. Usually I just strop 'em on my jeans. Anything that can dull a knife can also sharpen a knife.

At my shop workbench, with wipes and CLP lube, and at camp sites using my easy to carry Sharpmaker is where I sharpen my knives. For my axe and hatchet I have found that free hand sharpening on my concrete sidewalks gives my a good, workable edge.
